I hope it is an enjoyable and successful weekend for Frank and the whole AVA community in Denver. I wish I was able to attend. My brother is going and is very excited. I will have to settle for his personal report. I hope a good time is had by all.

Well I am back from the fest. I need a day or three to digest all of it. I went looking for speakers. I must say for $4,000 the HT3s, even in the little room sounded like my new set of speakers, I think Frank and Jim have a really good combo. For about $8,500 you get a killer set and cheaper then some of the cables I saw there! All in all I had a nice time. It was nice to get out of Chicago for a few days. Let me say this, It was really nice when I met Frank, I started to introduce myself and before I could get it out he read my name tag and knew who I was!  :smoke:

I posted briefly over at Jim's forum, but here's my take on Frank's room.

(I visited the room a couple times. It was a busy place!)

On one visit, the hybrid gear was driving the 3's. The hybrid gear is very transparent and exceptionally smooth. The 3's were able to show off the electronics very, very well. (more on this later..). It's hard to describe the Ultra gear with the usual stereo-typical slogans. On another visit to the room, the all tube gear was driving the 2's. A different presentation to be sure; a bit more laid back, but still very transparent and natural. (The bass response from the 2's really surprised me in this set-up). The new case for the 30 watt amplifier looked modern and cool.  8)

On a third (or maybe fourth!) visit; Frank swapped the Ultra pre-amp for the all-tube T8, "just for fun". The dac and amp remained the hybrid Ultra's into the 3's. This, IMHO, was wonderful. Jim's speakers allowed an immediate 'window' to the swap. I could easily hear the change; which I would describe as a very, very slight reduction in resolution; but with a discernable increase in 'air' and 'space'. Just what an all tube curcuit usually does. I must stress; this is only a preference for me. Both pre-amps are great. R-e-a-l-l-y great.

On one visit, there was a clown in there from the press. I over-heard a bit of his conversation with Frank. I think he thought he was listening to 'modified' Dynaco gear.   His face had this look of confusion ('cause he was clearly bowled over by the sound), so if you read somewhere in the press that the Dynaco gear in Frank's room sounded great; you'll know who it was. (what a buffoon.)  :icon_lol:

I can't imagine anyone not being impressed with Frank's room. No matter what gear or speakers were playing; it was so easy to listen past the gear and hear the music, that it was a refreshing oasis from many of the rooms at the show.

It was a pleasure to meet Frank. Like Jim, Frank is a true gentleman and was very gracious. It was clear that he and the visitors to his room were having great fun.

Awesome.

I am an owner of Jim's HT'3's and I was glad to have the opportunity to meet Frank Van Alstine.  A true class act and very knowledgeable.  I really enjoyed listening to Franks electronics with Jim's speakers.

I have never been to an audio show before, and it was a terrific time!  The AVA-Salk room was a highlight, and it was nice to meet Jim and visit with Frank.  The Salk speakers are indeed impressive – especially for the money.

As I wandered from room to room I couldn’t help but feel that Frank’s gear would handily show up most (all?) of the other electronics there!  Was nice to hear the T8 preamp, though will stay with my Ultra SL.  There was a lot of great and interesting other stuff, to be sure, including a number of innovative speaker designs.  Would love to go again next year – will have to see…  They will probably need a larger hotel, though – the Marriott was just barely adequate for it this year, and the show is growing.

I would have really liked to attend the show, but now reading all the wonderful things from people that were able to attend about AVA and Frank makes me feel  better now because I did not have to spend the money or time to go and I am already a proud and very happy owner (I think I can say for life,  present and future) of AVA equipment. It makes me feel good! Thanks to all that attended and have shared their comments.  :D
Frank, you deserve the praise. You have been at this hobby for a very long time and I am sure you will find yourself and your team very busy in the next few months. Keep it up!  :thumb:
I guess for me there is no need to even think about attending next year. I will put that money to my AVA Ultra upgrades for 2007.  aa

WEEZ,

Thanks for taking the time to send along your listening evaluations of the different setups.    It's very helpful to me.

I am realizing that I prefer tubes with my HT3s, though I have not yet listened with a tube preamp.

I've been switching between the 550exr and an Ultimate 70--about a week with one, then a week with the other.  The preamp is a T7.  The U70 is usually in our TV room, mated with a Super Pas 3, some bookshelf Salks and a sub.

The 550 seems to be a perfect match for the HT3s--incredible detail, dynamics, range and transparency.

The U70 (now also available in a "modern, cool" version, in your words!) would seem to be quite underpowered for these big speakers.  But I gotta say it has grown on me.  At moderate volume levels there's that pleasing sense of "air" and "space" that you mention.

Frank has suggested that I try a tube preamp with the 550 for the same or similar effect,  while also providing the HT3s with lots of juice.  So thanks for your comments about the T8/Ultra setup.  For now, I'm going to try my Super Pas 3, as soon as it gets home from the doctor.

Thanks again for your summary--here and in the Salk circle.
