Headphone use with my T8

I just picked up a set of Grado SR125 headphones. When I plug them in to my Transcendence 8 preamp they sound wonderful, but, music is still emanating from my speakers. I thought the phone plug would initiate a muting scheme. Am I missing something here?

Yeah, you need to turn off your power amp!

Yes, that's what I do too, but I leave my self-powered subwoofer (Biro Kensington) on, since the Grado 'phones are open air, for that extra kick in the bass  aa.
