Voltage Conversion and Facelift for 4BSST
« on: 26 Sep 2006, 01:42 am »
I'm moving from Hong Kong to Florida next month with my 4B SST. The shipment from Hong Kong to Florida is costly. But hell, I like the 4B SST so much that I decided to go ahead with it. I am told that I should get the voltage conversion (220V to 110V) work done when I arrive in the US. I'd also like to replace the damaged faceplate (19", silver).

Does anyone have an idea how much the voltage conversion and the faceplate replacement would cost? I certainly hope it wouldn't add up to cost more than buying a new one in the States.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Best,

I myself may face a similar situation 6 months from now - I NEED to know if to sell my 240v 4BSST or take it with me. So is voltage conversion a "couple of jumpers" question at an authorised service center or is it going to be a costly procedure?

I believe the cost to change voltage in the US is $250 but I will check on Monday. The costs will vary depending on the distributor and country. There are parts changes required as well as wiring changes and Hydro certification. We also re-register the warranty in the specified country.

Faceplates are $200 and Handles are $200 the pair except the 6B, 14B and 28B which are $300 for the faceplates and $300 for the pair of handles.

James, one can buy off the shelf 'plug and play' voltage converters in many electric shops; are these an acceptable alternative to having the amp sent to the factory for conversion?

HI,

As long as the transformer has a very low output impedance (less than 1/2 ohm)  your OK going from the 240 to the 120.

I would not recommended going for 120 to 240 as the 120 is a 60Hz design and 240 is a 50Hz design.
