One of those things weighs 900 pounds!?

Not quite. Each speaker weighs in at about 620 lbs. The additional shipping weight is the additional horn/midsection (each mid section weighs about 120 lbs), packaging material with hardboard inserts, and crossovers, etc.

Gadzooks!  Are there casters on them I assume?

Nope. The bottom of the base is smooth so it can be maneuvered on a carpet with a little help.

Ahh well, only 620 then for sure I can get them! If audiojerry pays for them I will be happy to store them at my place.  I would love to pull a big truck up in front, honk the horn a few times until all the neighbors came to their windows and then unload those suckers 'em right before their eyes.  "That's right ya sons-a-bitches, I'll give ya something to cry about!"  It's fun to dream.

I take it they've gone for the 'massive mass' approach rather than the 'light-rigid' route, eh?

 I like your attitude nathanm

That's right, pure mass. Just the TAD-4001 driver has an impressive amount of weight to it. I think it's like 30-40 lbs on it's own. Then the horn itself, made of solid hardwood. Add some nice, large heavily braced bass enclosures and you have yourself a 600+ pound speaker. I wouldn't put any little spikes under these unless you wanted ventilation holes in your floor :nono:

A couple of sonicrocks on top would probably help hold it all down.
And you probably have a couple left over, Nathan, I would imagine.

I can see these as your speakers, Nathan - just imagine - never having to look longingly at any other speaker for years, well months. Gotta be worth something.

If I buy them and keep them at your place, Nathan, do you promise to let me come over a blast away my Dianna Krall and Patricia Barber cd's?

Of course!  Whenever I'm not there you can pump up the volume until the whole block is relaxing to the lilting sounds of smooth jazz!

You have your genre's mixed up, Mr. N.
Associating DK and PB with smooth jazz is denegrating, and hurtful. :bawl:

My deepest apologies!  So what is it called then?  It can't be "rough jazz" at any rate, I know that much!   I'd also like to mention that I have officially purchased at least one Patricia Barber song, willingly and of my own accord.  :thankyou:  I have it on hand just in case the HiFi police show up and demand I show identification.  I can only imagine what it must sound like on the Usher speakers.  Certainly you must be able to count the bristles on the brushes!

Well, I don't own any Patricia Barber but do have Dianna Krall and can confirm that yes, you can hear the bristles on the brushes! That TAD driver reveals just about everything in a recording as long as the electronics share the same abilities.

Anyway, how about we just consider it Jazz for the sake of argument.

Last chance at this price!!!

To update on the D2 situation, I have help coming in next weekend to help me take down the speaker that has the imperfect horn to take care of it. There is no physical damage to it other than a separation at the seem. These are hard wood horns so the rapair should go well. It will be a time consuming process to take the mid section apart, remove the horn and the driver.
Once this is completed, I will not be offering them at this exceptional price as I will have to bring the price up a bit.
Other than the imperfection of the horn, the speakers are in near perfect condition.

The wood horn will be repaired this weekend. If I also have to have the custom boxes made, package them up and ship, the pricing for D2 speakers with everything included that has been mentioned throughout this thread will be $11,500+ shipping. You pick them up----call me for price. I'll help you load them. About 1/3 the value and still well under dealer cost of just the speakers themselves.

weekend bump.

With the changes and new direction now underway at the shop, I really don't need/want such large speakers although they will be the one speaker that will be missed the most of any speaker ever to make it's way through.

I finally had a chance late last week to sit down and just listen to music. It's not very often this opportunity comes about so it had to be with the D2s. I fired up the Manley SHRIMP and MAHI mono blocs and just vegetated for about 2 hours. It was a much needed break and listening session.

Here are a few pictures of both the damaged horn as well as the extra horn that is included with the speakers.

This first pictures shows the separation at the base of the throat. You can see how easily it can be repaired by applying some high quality wood glue. More labor would be involved in removing the horn from the mid section than actually repairing it.

This next picture shows the brand new horn that will be included with the system. Keep in mind that is a complete D2 mid section including the high gloss black mid section cabinet. NO DRIVER. You will notice the dispersion fins as well as the slight difference in shading of the finish. This mid section with the wood horn would cost over $4k to have built and it is included with the speakers.

Just thought I would mention that I would entertain partial trade offers. Please be realistic as I am letting these speakers go for well under dealer cost.
Not looking at anything in particular so let me know what you have in mind.

Please keep trade in inquiries to tube amps or speakers. I am getting a few very odd inquiries. (not from circle members)

Pretty Close: You are looking at well over $8k for the TAD-4001 drivers and horns. Not to mention the additional horn being thrown in valued cluse to $3500 with the mid section. Almost another $1k for the base drivers.
Through in the extra goodies........yep, one hell of a deal.
