XLR connector comparisons?
« on: 14 Aug 2006, 11:46 pm »
Hello everyone...

After recently purchasing a measurement mic and considering an amp with balanced inputs, I've finally become a bit more conscious of XLR connectors.  With RCA connectors, everyone seems to have a favorite, whether based simply on solid mechanics, personal sonic preference, or other criteria.  I've seen entire reviews dedicated to RCA plugs.  I haven't seen a similar degree of comparison or evaluation of XLR connectors, however.

Do people simply not notice much difference between various XLR connectors, or does the lack of comments just reflect the smaller number of users?  If you have noticed differences - mechanical, sonic or otherwise - I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

It does seem that there are fewer manufacturers of XLR connectors than RCA.  Leading contenders appear to be Neutrik, Cardas, Vampire and Furutech.  (I notice, however, that prices can be just as extreme as with RCA connectors!)

Thanks!

I've seen the Neutrik (and know others who have used it along with the Vampire) and personally used the Vampire and I'd use the Vampire for my choice of the 2.  I've also used Jenving's XLR and it is excellent,  www.jenving.se.  I'd probably opt for the Jenving vs. the Vampire just for the fact I like the design.  I could not detect sonic differences.
