These would make a great gift for my son's iPod. Might spurn his interest in Dad's hobby. http://www.audioengineusa.com/

Nice product!

Have a set here and they are very impressive for the $$$. The 'trick' is, like most 'studio type' monitors is the boundry effect when placing them on a table or bookshelf and also what is you ear level. See my review for a bit more details http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0706/audioengine_5.htm

Excellent review Steve.

A most humble thanks. Frankly, i really did not expect much as have heard quite a few studio monitors over the years and most either have harsh highs, one-note bass, or just sound very unbalanced. For the lowish $$$ these speakers get my vote!

My Audioengine monitors just arrived today and I am totally impressed.  They exude quality from the superb packaging they came in (white cloth bags around each piece, large foam end pieces, double boxes) to the fit and finish of the cabinets and materials themselves.  I bought them for my daughter to take to college for her iPod and Macbook Pro setup, but they may just be too good.  They certainly sound better than anything at this price point has a right to - very smooth with decent clean bass, no cheapo sub required.  You do need a Universal Dock to get remote volume control for the iPod.  Proper binding posts and alternative black color will not be available for some time according to them.  The white cabinets look great, though, on my white fireplace mantel.  They have two 1/8" mini inputs that actually sum the signals, so you need to turn one or the other source off - there is no switching per se.  I have the Airport Express on one and the iPod Dock/SB3/MP3 on the other.  I'd say forget about the Apple HiFi box which seems like a toy next to these (sorry Steve J - it's hifi, but not in a good way).

iTunes is filling them nicely from the MacBook Pro via Airtunes as I type.  The Squeezebox 3 works great as well on them.

...she isn't home yet today, so perhaps Dad should just stash them away and keep them to himself to play with (heh, heh).

Dude, take them as your own and get another pair for her   :D

Agree they are smooth and sound better than they should, especially the bass being quite useable.
