Hi,

Though that I should share my exprience on this. :D It might come in handy for other Mac PowerBook G4 users.

Okay, I got my 1ghz PowerBook G4 back in 2004. It work flawlessly since day one. I use it daily and take it outside sometime. But about 2 to 3 months ago. I noticed that the HDD is making funny clicking noises and seem to take longer to read things.

Than on Fri night the 21th the HDD just die. It was very frustrated  I tried turn it on and off again and again...nothing happend. So, I gave up.... just have to get it fix at the store.  The next day I went to the NY Rave and got to talk to Levi about it on our way there. And thanks for his encouragement on how easy the HDD could be chang and event offered to help me. I decided that I would give it a try myself. Hey! if I screw up I could just call Levi for help

So, I got home after the Rave and when on line and did some research on the net. Lucky me... I found a site on how to change the HDD in PowerBook G4, exactly the same model. :D But everything is in French! Good thing that the site got a good step by step pictures. Than I went on eBay and found a Toshiba "Travelstar" 60g 5400rmp HDD for $68 shipped  :P So, I bought it. It arrived on Wed. And here are some pictures...

Getting ready for the surgery. :D

New HDD Toshiba "Travelstar" 60G 5400rpm Look "Made in Thailand" Yeah! Same country I was made... nice!

This way I know where every screws go. :D

That little connector gave me a hard time.... I think I stripped off the cover a bit. :(  But at the end I decided to leave it in place and luckily it was long enough for the top to be taken off and put on the side.

Inside my Mac. Time to take out the dead HDD.

The old OEM Toshiba 40G "Made in China" HDD.

Well, now I am very happy to say that after reformatting the HDD and reloading the OS X on to the new HDD very thing work just fine :D And since I backed up every important files... mostly photos and some program applications on to my Seagate 400G external HDD I did not loose much. I think I have to ge another external HDD to back up my back up now  If I did not back everything up I would have to spend a lot more money to recover the data from the dead HDD. So, people you all should back up all the important files.

So far so good. Not a week old yet but the new HDD seems to work great. More space, run better and quieter than the old one. :D Definately more solid than the old one.

Well, this story have a happy ending. Good to have my Mac PowerBook back again. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

PS
Levi, you are right it was easy :D Definately easier and alot faster than putting my SET amps together for sure.

Congrats!

HDD crashes are inevitable.  All you need now is a backup software that backup your data automatically.

Hey!

Thanks guys. :D The new HDD is running fine. Like Levi said it will crash... maybe tomorrow or years from now. :(

So with that in mind I got another external HDD to back up my back up. This time is a 250g Seagate 3.5" HDD and case with Firewire. I got this from tigerdirect.com For $90 after rebate it is a pretty good deal. Took me 15mins or less to get it running with my Mac.... just need to format it and no need to install driver CD like PC. :D

Backing up the back up HDD in progress. :D
