Plugs for my Jags
« on: 18 Jul 2006, 04:41 am »
I lost one of the foam plugs for my Jags and I want to try plugging them when I get my Maestro. Can I use a small towel or a couple of clean socks to plug a port?

Thanks

Yes you can. Just roll up a cut down sheet or tea towel or whatever really tight and wedge it into the port. Or, head down to your local rubber/foam shop and get some reasonably dense foam that you can compress just enough to get in there and it will then expand to hold itself tightly in place.

Thanks for the input. I'll give the towel a try and keep my eyes open for some foam.

I have another question about my Jags and their placement. They're about 8.5' appart and there is a wall behind and on the side of the right channel and no walls around the left channel. Should I think about only plugging the right channel because it's corner loaded and the left has no walls at all? I've noticed that the closer I put the right speaker to the side wall it become boomier.

It is unlikely that you will get a good match by doing this as the rolloff point will be raised and rolloff slope will become more shallow (12db/oct for sealed vs. 24db/oct for ported).

If possible (even if only while you are listening) it would be better to pull the speakers furrther out from the wall behind. It may even be better to bring the speakers closer together, probably with less toe-in, so that you get the right speaker away from the corner a bit more. If the speakers were say 6' apart, you might want to sit closer to them (6' to 8') than you are now. This more nearfield setup will help to reduce the room effects.

The other alternative is to plug both speakers' ports and add a sub.

I think he said he is getting a Maestro-is that right?

I have a pair of Jags with ports plugged (yes you can use a variety of things to plug the port) and I use an ACI Titan.
I am getting a second Titan next week.

The advice to get the Jags out into the room not too close to walls is good. I would definitely eith plug both or unplug both.
Also think about bass traps and first refelction absorption of some kind if possible.

I moved the left speaker with no wall around it out a bit further and that seemed to make a big difference. The soundstage now seems larger and the speakers have disappered a bit more. I would love to figure out a way to reposition my equipment to pull that right speaker a away from the wall. I will be unpluging all of my equipment this week to move my cabinet and TV stand to make room for my Maestro. Would you guys recommend corner loading the Maestro or placing it in front of a wall? My focus is on two channel music but I love movies too.

I've tried like you to match the Jags when one is agaist a wall and the oyer is in open space. The only way I was able to remedy balance was to move them forward more to the center of the room. This is fine for listening but the wife frowned on the freedom of movement within the room. Oh by the way, I have a couple of old clean socks that I would love to pass on to you. I could also offer help in modifing the wall.

Corner loading can work well for subs. Best to experiment. Often it works even better to move out from the corner about 1/3 of the way along the back wall.

As far as the Jags or most any main speakers, the farther from the backwall (up to around 1/3 of the way into the room) the greater the sense of depth. One compromise for domestic tranquility can be found here:
