Well since I wasn't specifically looking for a BAT amp, I never thought about other models.

Looking at the specs, I would need them in mono bloc form as I don't think a 75 watt stereo version would be enough juice for my system and listening habits.

Judging from the sound I was getting before leaving on my business trip, they would have to be very, very, special to top the VK-600SE.

Hey George

I'm waay behind the times here on AC, congrats on the BAT amp.  Sounds like you found that special something in the BAT that's getting you closer to the music.

Keith,

Didn't you sell your 75SE's?  What did you replace them with?

Phil,

I'll send the VK-600SE down and you can send the BC 206 up.

George

That's not a fair trade...you'd be getting the far better deal...  8)

That 75 watts is much more powerfult than some amps i've had in my room---a Bryston 4BSST included.  The current from the massive output transformers are what does it i think.  I have heard the 250 next to the 75 (not even close), but not the 600 (well, heard it in show conditions, which didnt' count).  I have heard that the 600SEms and 150SEs sound very, very similar.  Tubes and good SS colliding i guess :)

That said--your speaks are like 84db sensitive right?  That in and of itself might disqualify the Salks from most tube amps out there (big VTLs excluded).

the magic even got better when i added the 51SE.  NOW your talking :)

JoshK--taken a step out of audio recently focusing on home renovations, so the BAT gear is gone.  Have nuforce right now...surprisingly good stuff for the money (the amps in particular).   Also starting to study for CFA, so won't have time for audio shopping soon :)

George,

How far are you from Boston?  Next time I drive to Boston- perhaps I need to take a BAT detour!

35-45 minutes to downtown and only about 15 minutes off the Mass Pike.

You are certainly welcome to come by whenever you are in town.

We could always use a little more New York up there (even for just an afternoon).

Keith,

Home renovation....I seem to know a little bit about that.   In my case I DIY (both audio and home ren) so that I can afford to keep my system.  But now I just don't have any time.

It just occured to me.

The BAT VK-500 along with VK-600\600SE\600M etc consumes in the equivalent of 4 x 100 watt light bulbs or 7 of 60 watt ones on idle.  The amp draws 400w just sitting there not doing anything.  The good news is that you will not see appreciable consumption increase during normal listening levels.

Cheers.

Hey!

Ahhhh... the price we audiophile pay for a good sound. Levi, that ain't so bad... imagine what a 200wpc tube amp will use! I guess we won't be see the "Energy Star" sticker on any high-end amp any time soon.

Talking about energy... as an audiophile in my case with tube amps... we use alot of engergy. Compare to those non-audiophle with smaller system playing the same music. I think we should all try harder to save engergy by other mean... like walk more, turn off lights and other thing we don't use, recycle, use energy saver compact fluoreslent lightbulbs :D

Hmmm... I think I'm showing the greener side of myself. Let's leave something for your kids to use in the future.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Hi Buddy you are correct.  That's the price of admission or some may refer to as cost of ownership.

I just got an email from Ron at Welborne Labs.  Your Apollo consumes about 1 of 100 watt light bulb or approximately 2 of 60 watt light bulb.

High powered tube amps like for example VK-60 120watts channel consumes little more than the VK-500/600/1000 with 6 of 100 watt light bulbs just sitting.

So Cheers.

Well the BAT VK-600SE does indeed suck up a lot of juice, but I am very happy to report that it continues to delivers the goods!!  Here we are a month later and I am still amazed at the level of improvement in my system.

HIghly recommended if you can swing it and need some power to make your system sing.

somewhere between Southboro and Worcester.  Went to two boarding school in Southboro (where my mom's family came from) from the age of like 6 -19.  It seemed like forever!  I haven't stopped moving since i left for the Coast in 62.   I remember when they built the Mass Pike through town.  It attracted all these suburbanites!

600 watts.  What for?

Hi John, I have not been around that long as much as you did but I sure did listened to a lot of amplifiers from a meager 3watts to 600+ watts.

600+ watts.  What for?  FUN

John,

I live in Holliston.

The BAT is 300/600 watts into 8/4 ohms.

My speakers are only 85db efficent and like to have a good amount of juice to sound their best.

Do I need 300 watts?  Nope.

I didn't decide to keep the BAT because of its watts, I kept it because of the sound it produces.

I would be perfectly happy with a little 18 watt amp if it would work in my system, but alas it won't.
