Amps with signal sensing auto turn on
« on: 23 May 2006, 02:00 am »
I'm looking for a couple auto turn on amps. A lower powered one for a pair of bookshelves in the bedroom, and a more powerful one for a pair of full rangers connected to the TV. The emotiva BPA-1 would be great for the bookshelves, but a little spendy, and maybe an audiosource for the full range. I've had an audiosource burn out in less than a year, so I'm a little hesitant to try again.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks, Ryan

Find a good sounding amp an leave it on all the time.  At the extreme outside this is going to cost an additional $20 bucks/yr.

Just no sense in limiting your choices to an "auto-on", unless of course your thinking green.  If that's the case, I'm exiting, staqe right.

I know that NAD makes units with auto-sense, but I've heard that this feature isn't implemented all that well.

I am not thinking even midfi at all, just ease of use, budget, safety, and maybe a little green.

Rod Elliot's page has some pretty straightforward kits that allow you to build a remote sensor for amps that don't have them built in.  So you won't have to limit your search.  Costs ~$50 to build.

Cool site, but I dont think I want to put that much work into this.
Is this a crazy idea: The soft starts for hypex amps can be turned on with a switch, can I use a relay turned on with the rca video out from a TV?
ie, what kind of voltage does an rca video out have, and is there a relay that can use this?
Thanks, Ryan

I don't know of any ready made designs that do this.  In theory it is doable, but I am not sure it would be transparent.

I was thinking of an auto relay where the video signal trips the relay and completes the circut to turn on the softstart.
As for transparent, I could use the monitor out from the tv, It would only be used to switch the relay. I just don't know if an RCA video signal is enough to trip the relay.
