I can't see wasting a lot of money on a transport.  That's why I use a DVP-S7700 myself (with mods).  I have had the philips in my system.   I didn't like it as a CDP.  It is not as heavy-duty as the Sony.

There are a ton of excellent used DAC's on Audiogon for under $300.
