George has heard lots of good digital, so I would give some serious thought to his opinions. Lots of folks have switched to that technology, and swear that the sonics are better. And the convenience sure can't be beat!

Me? I have no experience whatsoever with it.
I'm a dinosaur still spinning vinyl......and a one box cd player on occasion.

Depends on your taste, and depends on your amp. An amp with low input sensitivity might not be a good match for a CDP running direct, because the amp might synergize better with a higher signal that a preamp puts out...

With all due respect to Phil, who I encourage to do everything possible to satisfy the needs of a customer, I will mention that Dan Wright can adjust the output level of the Modwright Sony 999ES to custom match your amplifier's input sensitivity. I am referring to the Modwright with volume control. You should also know that the Modwright volume control is NOT remote controlled. That may be a factor.

I frankly don't care which CD player you choose, 2bigears, but I'd like you to have the full platter of info at your disposal.

FWIW, I don't represent any of the products being discussed here, so I'm just offering my opinion. That's great info about the Modwright player that I didn't know...

No problems. I used to represent RA, but I don't any longer (for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the player or the quality of the company)..so that's where you may have gotten that impression from. As you can tell, I still really like their CDP...

It's that good. But, I'm talking about the Platinum version with the new clock upgrade. These still are a screaming bargain on the used market, and can be purchased for $1800-$1900. Of course, the volume control option is additional.

Ah. I thought so. By the way, that new Blue Circle BmPH integrated looks intriguing. Blue Circle certainly has a cornucopia of products...SS, Hybrid, tube. It's hard to keep it all straight.

I would go with the future: An Olive Musica or Symphony, modded by RWA including a bigger HD (500GB best choice presently), and you get a superb CD player/transport/music server while still having over $500 to spare.

I would like to second the recommendation. Modded SB3's have been compared with CD players costing megabucks - the highly modified versions beating them all. Vinni reports this modded player sounds better again:

Hard drive based audio whether using ethernet (including WiFi) devices like the Squeeze Box or USB based DACs particularly those implementing I2S avoiding the additional translation to SPDIF have rendered CD players obsolete. The normal human reluctance to change coupled with the learning curve involved in the relatively basic PC concepts to implement it properly are apparently preventing many from making the move. For a $2500 investment and some help from people on this and other boards, you can begin to approach near SOTA in digital playback going the hard drive route.
I've got no axe to grind with anyone still selling CD players. Phil, for instance, in my few dealings with him has always impressed me as a fair, friendly and knowledgeable man. Its just that you get so much more in terms of performance and ease of use with hard drive based audio that CD players can't compete.
