2X2 channel "simulated surround" tweak for rears
« on: 12 Apr 2006, 05:33 am »
How do I find a unit that will filter out all of the in-phase signals and amplify the out of phase signals?

This idea was suggested by our fearless leader, Scott F.  I am posting this here rather than just sending him a PM because I thought some others may be interest as well.

In front I have Magnepan IIIAs biamped.  In back I have Mag 12QRs.

Hey Mike,

Watcha tryin to do? I have a Yamaha pro logic processor which may be of interest to ya that I could let ya have on the cheap or for a trade. I don't know if it does what you want or not. I'll see if I can find a link to the manual and post it.

Thanks, Mark.  I'm just looking to alter the sound of the rears by boosting ambient signals and cutting primary signals, basically brining out background sounds.

In high school I had a radio shack graphic eq that had an IMX Expander that would boost the ambient signal creating a simulated surround effect.  It sounded terrible back then, but I'm sure there is a digital unit out there somewhere that will do the trick for cheap.  I just need to find it.

When I shared my idea with our fearless leader, he suggested a unit that would do the trick.  I didn't ask him for the model name, nor did I write down what he said.

I'm pretty familiar with the sound of the Yamahas because both of my brothers and my dad have owned them at one point or another.  They are nice, but I'd like to avoid the delay processors.  My Driverack digital EQ can add all the delay in the world if I'd like.   :D

Oh, did I mention that I just ordered a Driverack 260?     This sucker can do anything including phase and polarity shifts.  www.driverack.com  That would be a topic for another post.

Hiya,

Since you are just looking for effects, one of the inexpensive processors should do you fine. You'll be limited to balanced or 1/4" TRS connections but since you are only doing essentially the 'hall' effect, it shouldn't matter. You're going to be driving the small Maggies with the Jolida right?

Anyway, here's a Behringer unit that has lots of functions on it. One of the settings is bound to give you the effect you are looking for.
=================================
The Behringer DSP2024P Virtualizer Pro offers 71 breathtaking new algorithms, most in true stereo. Wave-adaptive Virtual Room reverb; awesome modulation; dynamic, psychoacoustic, and EQ algorithms; plus innovative amp simulation, distortion, and special effects make this a mind-blowing effects processor never before seen in this price range. 11 effect combinations with selectable serial/parallel configuration and up to 7 adjustable parameters plus 2-band EQ per effect provide precision control. 24-bit A/D/A converters with 64/128X oversampling, true stereo processing, and 24-bit internal processing offer studio-quality sound. Plus much more.

Do either of those work?

I think I've got a DBX unit here somewhere that has the 'ambiance' setting on it. That plays with phasing heavily. You'd have to lower the volume to the rear channels by (I'm guessing) -12db and boost the ambiance to max to get the effects you are looking for (I think). You're welcome to grab mine and try it out to see if it does what you are looking for.

Lemme know.

Those ideas sound like fun experiments.

I would be running from the Driverack to whichever processor using balanced cables.  Then the manipulated signal would go from the new unit to the Jolida using a pair of ho-made xlr to rca cables.  (I wasn't the ho that made them, they came with the Rogues years ago.)

Thanks for the links and ideas.   :P
