What would you buy for speakers for $2500?

There are some cool suggestions listed up there.

If I had that money I'd try either a Brines F-200A with super/hyper tweeter and a Behringer DEQ2496 for room interactions, or whatever small standmount that did it for you in the past, a sub or two, and one of the Behringer's.

Those will play loud and clean with little power. I think they'd make great HT speakers too. Sound quality I'm sure is excellent even though an older version.

With real bass into the 20's I'd also buy a Behringer DEQ 2496. The Behringer is also great for adjusting the sound any way you like whether it be to compensate for room modes or personal tastes. You could buy both of these and have alot of change left over.

Common Warnerwh, you got to be kidding.

Those VMPS supertowers are over 20 years old. I'm sure the drivers are almost "out of shape" and probably need to be replaced any days now. BTW, I did own the later version of VMPS supertower and I have to say that there are far better speakers out there for the money. I would look into the RM30, RM40 and 626 first before even thinking about the supertower.

Nearfield listening? I'd limit the number of drivers. Single driver designs have many appealing qualities. For your price range you could also try smaller one or two way designs and add a nice sub.

F-100: I'm presently listening to some Dynaco A-25's from the early seventies. They sound as good as they did when they were new. These Dynaco A 25's were my first pair of hi fi speakers in about 1971. I'm sure those old VMPS speakers should work fine. Speakers don't wear out per se. The surrounds can rot or they can be blown but under normal circumstances they should last a very long time. There are numerous old speakers from the 70's that are working fine especially if they have rubber surrounds.

It probably wouldn't hurt to replace the caps in these 35 year old Dynaco's but they seem to be working and sounding fine. For home theater you couldn't touch those speakers for 1,200 bucks. Even for music I bet they're not bad assuming they're in a large room.

Supravox 215 field coil on OB with power supply, higher than what you have budgeted, might be the last speaker you might ever own...

more realistically, the FTA-2000s as some people have suggested.

Max, with the FTAs, you need no supertweeter, unless of course, we want a little more "air."

Most commercially made speakers as commonly recommended are more cabinets and mark ups for advertisement rather than raw performance speakers.

I highly recommend a used set of the Gallo Acoustics Ref 3. Since the 3.1 came out they go for around $2000 on Audiogon. I am a dealer but I am not offering to sell you Gallo as you are way out of my area; I just think that the Gallos are terrific speakers. There are other fine speakers, but the Ref 3s are special. I say this based on 27 years of listening experience in the stereo business. Go to www.roundsound.com and see what the professional revioewers say.

Isn't that the truth! I think this is especially true for speakers. Consider this very thread. Each member (more or less) had a completely different recommendation.

In the opinon of many, including Chris (AKA lonewolfny42 who owns them), no speaker they have heard near its price will best it. And no subwoofer required. I am sure one of the dealers may be able to do a deal to reduce the price further. IMHO you owe it to yourself to listen to them. Those that have are quickly converted - just like Jim Merod was. He has likely heard virtually every speaker there is - and to say the revelations beat them all is some statement. Athough that is for the Revelations the Time-pieces are more similar than not. You owe it to yourself to audition them. I am so impressed I purchsed them unheard - I trust the ears of all those who have. BTW their designer/manufactuer Bob Smith is one hell of a great guy - and knows his stuff to boot.

I'll heartily 2nd the recommendation for the Magnepan 1.6. Add an ACI Force sub, and you're still under $2600. I just don't see a better value in loudspeakers than Magnepan. Especially the 1.6.
