Trouble Ripping certain CDs to FLAC Using EAC
« on: 2 Apr 2006, 06:02 pm »
I am ripping my CD collection to FLAC files, and I find the occasional CD that just hangs up in the FLAC process.  I am using EAC and Mareo.  Has anyone else experience this?

The CDs that are causing me problems are:

Carly Simons Reflections/Greatest Hits
Bobby Caldwell - Timeline/Anthology Part 1
Bobby Caldwell - Time & Again/Anthology Part 2

Thanks, John

What is the condition of each of these discs?  EAC, in its proper ripping mode (secure, gap detection c, etc.) may take 8-12 hrs to rip a badly scratched disc, or one with a single but track-oriented gouge.

Edit:  Or are you truly saying its hanging at the FLAC encoding?  Dunno why that would be at all.....once it's in wav, whether temporarily or not, copy-protect issues and bad track issues are behind us.  Hmmm.

Another possibility is that you've got some copy protected CDs.  I've found that the Audiograbber program does a good job of getting around the copy protection.  It doesn't guarantee an exact copy like EAC but at least you can rip the disc.  Take a look here and see if it works any better:

Two of the CDs are in pristine condition, one has a few minor scratches (that I would not expect to cause a problem).

The problem appears to be at the very end of the FLAC processing.

I will try to burn using Nero (and FLAC) and see if that solves the problem.

Are there any strange characters in the track titles that Flac chokes on?

Flac has been known to choke over strange characters in track titles.  Try renaming the wav before converting to flac.

No strange characters in the song titles, but I do think that the problem may revolve around the file names (a problem with Mareo, not EAC).  Nero had no trouble with these CDs, which supports the file name problem.
