Hugh,

Any update on the status of the Aksonics upgrade?

Michael,

Nothing yet.  I'm torn between dropping the speaker altogether (no margin in it), doing my own (big learning curve), and ignoring the Seas drivers, which are grossly overpriced.  It's all a bit hard.

In the meantime, I'm working on my core business, the power supplies, amp designs, Swift manufacture, and the MC Head Amp.

How about I speak with Ron, and you can call him and chat?

Cheers,

Hugh

Hugh,

Thanks for the reply.  I am happy to redo the crossover myself if Ron wants to discuss it further.  Maybe the drivers are too expensive anyway.

I am sure a few people are interested.

I have come to the stark financial realisization that the Orions will just be a dream and my Aksonics, 55N+ and GK-1 will be my system for quite some time.

Hugh,

Any more news from Ron on the upgrades, or has this idea been abandoned?

Maybe fellow Aksonics owners can contribute to a design of our own.

The new web page design is interesting.

Hi Michael,

I will talk again to Ron in the next week - I have to see him with a speaker repair in fact - and try again.  It's difficult to negotiate because all his business is one off, and he is loathe to sell his designs.

Cheers,

Hugh

Rookster,

I reckon the idea of a "designer contributed" speaker would be an interesting excercise in a joint process but would it be possible? The first thing that strikes me about speakers is that for all the different approaches there's just as many devotees, each of whom think there own approach is the best [like mine of course :)]. Everything from single driver to Orions has it's strengths and weaknesses.

My ideal, Xover problems aside would be an expandable system that allowed for evolvement of both the amps [from basic amp through bi- to tri-] with a corresponding expansion of speakers with the top of the line being tri-amped. Xover probs aside, this seems to be the best way to optimize the best of a 100W amp for bass, a 55W amp for mids and maybe a 25W for highs. The speakers could be in separate boxes but maybe, if the box was big enough, it would be possible to fit all the amps in the one box [traffos excluded]. This way, when you wanted to add to what you have you'd keep the same amp box and just put more inside it ... easy!

As if Hugh doesn't have enough to do already  :). Maybe an interesting pipe dream anyway and of course Andy and others have been strong advocates for bi- amd tr- amping for some time.

Hugh,

Thanks for the reply.  If Ron does not want to sell his designs that that is fair enough.  When you raved about it in your news page it sounded like it would be a good idea. It is a shame the prototype/sample sounded so good, but Ron seems to have no plans of going further with it.  Perhaps I will do some research and think about it for myself and maybe try something myself.

Jules,

I was interested in upgrading my Aksonics only.  Not a new design in a new box.  I have the boxes and don't want to build anything new.  I was meaning if the group could offer design ideas for an Aksonics upgrade using Sacn-Speak drivers or similar.  It would be along the lines of what Ron built for Hugh in his news page  a while ago.
