Hardwood floors and downfiring sub ??
« on: 15 Mar 2006, 01:41 pm »
Anybody care to share thoughts on this?

The Titan XL is looking very nice, but I started to think about down firing v. side firing subs on hardwood floors. I need some help.

Hardwood floors and downfiring sub ??

I've had a Force planted in an uncarpeted corner of my living room for a couple of years now, and I've been very pleased with my setup.  The sub integrates seamlessly in my system (Sapphire XLs in front, Emeralds in back), with virtually no directionality in the bass tones during music listening (at least, not to my ears; YMMV) and very modest directionality on home theater (we're talking major bass output, the kind that shakes the furniture).  My living room is medium size, roughly 18'x20'x9'.

I was using my DF sub on carpeted floors and found that spiking it to a slightly larger 1 3/4" thick maple board added to dispersion/loudness some, but mostly added to a tighter sounding bottom end.  Whether this was from a sounding board effect or because I raised the sub driver another total of 4-5" off floor or both???  I much preferred it in my set up.

You've gotten good advice already. Bottom line . .  . no worries here. I've had a number of our subs on various hardwood, tile, etc without problems. We're dealing with soundwaves which are up to 55' + long here . . . a 1/2" of so of carpet is just not relevant. Get the sub and enjoy it!
