When old is new again...

Hi,

After reading the review of the Magico "Ulitmate" I was captivated and amazed of how you could get great sound with old audio technologies of early last century! :D

The reason of which I get a kick out of reading and see these speaker because my own system is also based on old audio technology. You know... tube amp/pre, high efficient single driver speaker and of cause analog vinyl.

Back to the "Ultimate" I'm surprised that someone would take the concept of hi-ef mulit-horn to this extream today in the 21th Century. Maybe there is something that old audio technology of early 20th century could still offer us. With new hi-tech materials combined with old designs and you get something like the "Ultimate"  There is something that high-efficient speaker could do that lower one can't and yes I am a believer in this... although in my case Fostex based single driver speaker are only 95dB not 110dB+like the Ulitmate. I have small room and single driver work great... and of cause with all the single driver magic! With much bigger room the "Ultimate" would be.... well ultimate speaker!

Anyway, reading about  the "Ultimate" really give me the respect and admiration for those early audio pioneers. Think about it if those people who invented the horn speaker, tube and etc could see the "Ultimate" and the rest of the system reviewed in the Absolute Sound, I think they will be shock that after nearly a Century ( and a Century+ for some audio techs) we make new system based on thier design! :o I must say thank you to all the those great audio pioneers of whom aimed for better sound. :D (MP3 inventor are not inculded of cause )

I wish that I will have a chance to hear them.  :(  Now now now... don't get me worng people I'm not trying to convert you guy into SET and Hi-ef speaker. Just want to show you other way of sound reproduction.... in an old fashion kind of way this time.

Here is the link to the "Ultimate" and you could read the Absolute Sound by click on the "review" on top... you will new PDF reader.

Well, back to enjoying the music for me... with old audio techonologyof cause

$230,000 pair? Without the amps? Give me a frickin' break.

I'll take the Avantgarde Trios and a couple of basshorns, pocket the $120,000, and be far ahead of that square throated monstrosity.

Hi,

    Easy there Parnelli.... :D

Yes, I agreed with you that Avantgarde would be a much better deal when is come to multi-horn speaker. I've heard them at the show and they are great... if you have big room.

Anyway, my post is not about $$$$ it is about the technology. I'm just excited that there are people who would take what work in the past and combine them with new hi-tech material and computer aid and come up with something like that.

Oh! yes I think those "monstrosity" 70hz (:o)horn would be better off with Avantgrade Basshorn on the bottom

Hey Buddy!

You're not contemplating some new perches for Mr. Bubble are you???

Cool retro tech and they probably sound amazing, but I wouldn't be able to live with those looks... kinda reminds me of a cross between SpongeBob and Gumby  :?

The woofers seem like a minor league after thought compared to the rest.  Little detail available, but at this price and level of service I'd recomend room specific bass reproduction solutions.

Matching bass performance (efficiency and dynamics) to horns has always been a problem.  Use of the room corners, like used by Klipschorns is one of the best designs ever created, but only goes down to 40 Hz.

Interesting point presented regarding limiting horns to such a narrow frequency range to eliminate typical horn distortion.

The cost/complexity of this speaker (that still lacks matching deep bass performance) brings me comfortably back to the reality that I'm satisfied to be oriented to a 90% of ultimate performance for 10% of the price kind of guy.

Gordy,

I wish I could do that. I think Mr. Bubble will be happy hanging out in those 70Hz horns

But for now he seems to be happy with my cheap DIY Fostex based speaker.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
