That's F-ing BS! If that station changes even one bit, it will lose its uniqueness:

Link 1

Link 2

This really pisses me off. I'm calling them tomorrow.

To wrap up a reply to a number of posts, I'm going here. I live in Houston (so, yes, I do pull KTRU over the air), and work at UH.

The specifics in the Houston Press article (link 2, above) are how I understand the future to be: The KUHF slot will become an NPR-fest, while KTRU will become KUHC, and go all classical. To add something here, I think KTRU is going to get 30 days to continue as they are, then things change.

In answer to the idea that UH is paying too much, I don't think they are. They will get the license, transmission gear (inc. tower & transmitter), and at the current broadcast power.

And that's the big thing: Broadcast Power. IIRC, KTRU is at 50K, which makes them one of the few Class-A stations in the country. With UH taking over as is, there are a whole stack of hoops they don't need to jump through, which equates to not wasting a bunch of time (or money).

As for my personal opinion, I'm not in a position to start slagging in a public forum...

[Something I forgot to mention earlier]

This impending deal won't necessarily make KTRU go dark: The internet presence can go on uninterrupted. Hmmm...I guess I'll have to start setting up my laptop, and use the USB input on my Peachtree Audio Nova to get some tube in the chain.

                  John Abercrombie: Night

Appears to have become a pricey little sucker, unless you get the re-issue by Abercrombie.

I listen to TRU often on the car radio.  Guess that won't be happenin.  The jazz stations in Houston are terribly weak.  Go as far north as The Woodlands and you've got zip.  Maybe U of H will have jazz programming with those kilowatts.

I tried calling the station manager a few times today, but never made it past the secretary. She wasn't saying much, but made it sound like it was a done deal. Man, if I could just get Pandora in my car none of this would matter. I can't get any jazz stations here in League City, and didn't even know there were any until you mentioned it. I can get 20 or so "classic rock" stations though

The three stations I listened to the most while driving were KPFT, KTSU, and KTRU. I recently had my truck broken into, and my aftermarket head unit torn out. With 30% of my selections gone, I'm probably not going to get it replaced.

Sometimes KTSU is real hard to pick up. Certain times of the year, they have _horrible_ sounding MP3 CDs going when they don't have DJs available. That, and their Chief Engineer seems to be a little sloppy on occasion.

Great one pumpkinman, one of my favorites. Mellow, and interesting inter-play of the two guitarists. They did a follow-up a few years later that was excellent as well. In fact I've been looking for the 2nd one for a bit now, but it's buried in the clutter somewhere around the house.

89.7 KACC - Alvin Community College is an "OK" station that I use as a back-up when KTRU has their "weird periods", like Saturday mornings when they play cartoon themes and childrens songs. They play a blues-rock format that can be painfully watered-down with classic rock at times. I can't remember what night of the week it's on, but they have some Spanish speaking D.J.s that play alternative Mexican music that is simply awesome. Only problem is I can never figure out who the artists are because I'm too Gringo :duh:

What's the fascination with Led Zeppelin in this town
