You don't have to know the back story behind Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators and psychedelic rock fame to appreciate this cd, but if you do know the story of his exploitation by the music industry and his decades long descent into madness and the Texas mental health/penal system, the fact that this disc even exists is amazing. While not reference grade sound (the first track is from a tape created at the Rusk asylum for the criminally insane) and perhaps a bit overproduced by Will Sheff of Okkervil River (imo), the emotion of Roky's performances are what makes this cd special.
