Hipsters. I posted this album earlier today. Having listened to it over the last few hours permit me to re-introduce you to Maria Neckam and her album released just 2/16 on Sunnyside records from Brooklyn (NY) entitled Deeper.
This Austrian transplant by way of Holland is gonna be big amongst
jazz afficiandos. She is soon to tour Italy but will back in NY late this year. I know all this from her website (below) but have had her new CD in my player for the last few hours. She composed all the songs and sings like a bluesy butterfly. And her band is fabulous. Guys I've never heard of but who communicate and play in ensemble and improvise beautifully. Several of her 10 songs are 6 and 7 minutes plus long so her band can stretch out. Her bass player is somethin. Thomas Morgan. Cat named Samir Zarif on tenor who plays especially wonderfully on track 5. And they are so musically in touch. And she is quite the improviser, too. Note frickin perfect. This album has a nice and unique ebb and flow to it because, I think, she is the only composer (Samplers- check out tracks 1-5). You're in for a nice surprise, I'm tellin ya. Cheers.
Oh, and the recording has fine instrumental tone and punch especially in the mid bass.
