If you like the big band sound of the 50's, of the Dizzy Gillespie era but want the sonic quality of today's recording capabilties, then look no further. Roy Hargrove's Big Band has it all,,, in spades.

I like Roy Hargrove too, Robin, though he is more or less a straight ahead player. Someone looking for bop or Afro-cuban oriented jazz won't find it on Emergence. To his credit, Hargrove has achieved a nice modern post Count Basie big band sound. An added bonus to Emergence is the guest appearance of Roberta Gambarini. She has an amazing voice and I can highly recommend her album You Are There. Check it out if you don't already have it.

I think of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker as one-of-a-kind on their respective instruments. The only one even close was Clifford Brown, but his life was tragically cut short at 25 -- a major loss to jazz.

Emilie-Claire is far and away my favorite jazz vocalist. There's just something about the sweetness of her talented voice that just takes my breath away and her recordings are always topnotch. I have every one of her albums, here's her latest.
