Kenny Garrett- Beyond The Wall (Nonesuch). My God this alto player burns on this!! Pharoah Sanders is on this with Mulgrew Miller playing his ass off and Bobby Hutcherson on a few tracks. Sanders is robust but not doing any of that squealing he was once known for. I hated it, frankly. His squealing, that is. I could do without the vocals on this and wish Kenny were more forward in the mix but there is no mistaking there is some serious passion and high art happening here. I mean he gets it ON on some of these tracks!
