Ollabelle

Just saw them last weekend - without Amy Helm (at left, Levon's daughter) and Glenn Patscha, who were off taking care of newborns - but with a different keyboardist and joined by folk singer Richard Shindell.

Beautiful.

Mark the Murphy.  I’m gonna critique one of his albums for you (you critique somethin, too, by anybody*).  Now, understand that this is a guy that can sing with his diaphragm open, can adjust his volume and slide thru notes like a trombone.   He is a deep toned singer like a Joe Williams.  The arrangements on his best album (tho I haven’t listened to Stolen Moments, yet) are soooo very good I don’t know how to tell ya.  Kudos to the guy what did them.  Nine musicians back him and I’ll say right up front don’t miss the playing on the outtake on All The Things You Are.  And Don’t Misunderstand is to die for!  Just listen to him and where he goes on this.  Welcome Home second (I'm partial to the ballads).  I remember a critic saying that Mark’s interpretation of Eleanor Rigby lacked the irony the Beatles intended.  Or, maybe it’s that the Beatles couldn’t play jazz or blues, you penus head, cause it IS a lament or did you miss that part?  The last line to the Father MacKensie chorus actually is sung with a little irony if you ask me.  Murphy will tear your heart out on this.  You know, there have only been a handful of great male jazz singers.  The album is Satisfaction Guaranteed.  Jazz fans, give this a spin.  LOL.
