Sam Phillips was formally known as Leslie Phillips, as far as I know it was only a name change, not a gendre one. But who really cares when the contemporary folk/rock is as good as this!

No, not a gender change for sure but, genre, yes! Sam started out as a very devote Christian Music singer, though after a falling out with the elders of her faith, switched to pop music.
The sordid details are available, won't get into that. She was also married to T-Bone Burnett for many years and, though now divorced, they remain close friends and he continues to produce her work.
