For this fine straightahead trio set, the talented if somewhat obscure pianist Shelly Berg performs five standards and seven originals with bassist Lou Fischer and either Randy Drake or Steve Houghton on drums. The music swings in conventional fashion with the highpoints including "Star Eyes," "How Deep Is the Ocean" and "Here's That Rainy Day."

Ambient electronic music... revolving around drone like electronic twinkling sounds, vocals with echos takes you along the corridors of time... or snippets of cornet/fuglehorn bent out of shape...
Takes repeated listening to appreciate.

Steve Coleman and The Council of Balance...disc1...Genesis.
This is a big band...about 28-30 members, including Greg Osby, Ravi Coltrane, Greg Tardy, George Lewis, Ralph Alessi, David Gilmore, Andy Milne, Vijay Iyer, Regg Washington and many others...not casual music...very complex arrangements and playing.
A 2disc set, the second disc is with his smaller group, Five Elements. Released in 1997.
May be out of print now, but could be found used.

Dreamy vocals in a musical landscape of electronic and acoustic textures that brings to mind samba and Sade. Nina Miranda never seem to raise her voice above a soft whisper...very sensual.

I find myself playing this CD at least 5 times more than I play "I have the room above her".
I really love the two Mingus tunes that open the album, a perfect introduction...Pithecanthropus Erectus and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.
Excellent sparkle to the cymbal work, and great space between the instruments, nice clean round bass notes...demo material stuff...5 stars.

2+ hours of beautiful music being created in the now that was then... hearing all the false starts and technical problems adds to the ambience.
