Radiohead - The Bends
Although the differences in beat, rhythm and harmony that separate traditional Korean music and jazz may partially explain why jazz has been approached only relatively recently in Korea, in fact Korean traditional musicians are fundamentally suited to jazz given the large element of improvisation inherent in Korean folk styles. These two CDs offer a tantalizing slice of Korean jazz and improvised music, and represent part of the Korean Arts Management Service's (KAMS) efforts to promote Korean artists abroad. The first CD showcases how jazz has been absorbed by traditional Korean music, while the second presents Korean jazz artists, a number of whom have made a name for themselves in the United States...On first listening to the eight traditional/jazz songs, what stands out is the insistent rhythm of the janggu drum which is common to nearly all Korean music. Pianist Miyeon and percussionist Je-Chun Park, however, have little to do with traditional Korean sounds on "Change 1." Miyeon's charging runs and tempestuous abstraction accompanied by Park's crashing percussion lean more towards the avant-garde jazz of Cecil Taylor, sandwiched between a melodic, riff-like motif which opens and closes the piece. Miyeon's jagged and undeniably dramatic piano playing (and Park's exhilarating percussion) is also heard on "Hwimori + Improvisation" by the seven piece Yesnajok. Layered rhythms, atmospheric gongs and a strident cornet combine to produce a heady, unique ensemble voice. Utterly distinctive too, are the sounds of Yoon-jeong Heo's geomungo which sounds like a darker berimbau. Picked this up at the Fair a while ago...I am shocked at the excellent sonics, very well recorded. I like the traditional disc 1...nice blend of Korean musical tones within a jazz sphere.Into the Light. Music of Korea III: Traditional Music & Jazz
Across the thirteen songs that make up the album proper, varied highlights roll out thick and fast, with the insanely catchy "Silver From", a stonking version of CCR's "Fortunate Son" and "She Likes" illustrating the album's serious rock credentials, while the more Americana feel of "Avalon", "Ballad Of Mr. Barbo" and "Emerald Lake" offer a far more considered approach, giving this collection of songs a mature and refined air. Vocally Malone has the authority and range to sound confidently comfortable in either setting, with his tone sitting somewhere between Steve Earle, a more tuneful Petty and on the odd occasion a less pretentious Michael Stipe. His voice remains impressive throughout, however when JD teams up to form beautiful little vocal harmonies with Hampton the results really are quite wonderful. Zebu Nation is Madagascar in a softly ripened beachy pop mood: plump, smooth, and digestible as a pear. The music moves in swells, as Razia is persuasive and firm, and when the instruments start to gallop, as they do in “Salamalama Aby”, her voice is like a hand laid on the song, radiating balance. Did you go today? How many CDs did you pick up in the two days. I only picked up 9 CDs yesterday on two separate visits. I had a much bigger haul last year.
Hey Paul, yes I went today and picked up about 120cds. Price was lowered to 4 for $1. by the time I got there around 2:30pm. of those I picked up 6 @ $3.ea. at another table. I probably only covered 50% of the crates, its exhausting sifting through all those cds.Sunday is definitely the day for the best deals. Total 186 this year.
Wow, where are you finding the room to stash them? You gonna be listening to all the new finds until sometime next year. I'm going on Sunday next year. At 4 for $1, I'll pick up anything that attracts me, either by the album title or cover.
