There is a cat from eastern Europe named Heinz Sauer who plays ballads especially well also and seems to be a kindred spirit to Shepp, IMO. It seems to me that it was Mal Waldron on piano on Dolphy's Five Spot dates. I got stuff in storage I haven't listened to in years (got an old recording of Shepp with Bill Dixon from the avant garde jazz days), I really need to remedy that. Thanks.

It came out a few years ago, Jim. I like them both and was intrigued by the pairing. It's a good one. And yes, it's Waldron on the Five Spot dates.

Boom!...and the music jumps right out at yah...had to run over and lower the volume.

The music here takes some very unexpected turns...the orchestral flourishes certainly keeps your attention. Periodically a deep deep drum kick rocks the air.
Massive dynamic swings from the quiet sax notes to that deep deep drum kick. aa
