This French guitarist was actually born in Algeria and has long been fascinated with his North African roots as well as the Celtic folk traditions of western Europe. :guitar:

Habib Koite & Bamada-  AFRIKI (Cumbancha).  Made me think of Gordy.  Friends of Gordy, how about one of you opening a World Music topic.  Something like "Gordy's World Music Topic", for example :dunno:, or whatever you think.  There's no topic for this exclusively (which is why I'm posting here).  I was not a close friend myself and think a tribute like that oughta come from one who was.

Why ghetto-ize it? If you want world music to get exposed to more people, hiding it away in it's own category will limit it's visibility and may not be the best way to do it. Hasn't done wonders for the popularity of jazz or classical...Just a thought.
I first got exposed to world music like Fela Kuti and Orchestra Baobab because they got some mainstream press.
