Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley
Eva Cassidy could do it all as a vocal virtuoso: sing the blues, belt out a soul tune,
sing jazz arragements of tunes from the Great American Song Book, and stirr you with
a heart-felt ballad. She also had a superb band behind her, especially Lenny Williams
on the piano and Chris Biondo on guitar. Her death at just 33 years old was a great loss.
Live at Blues Alley is one of the best live albums in my collection.
Andre Previn and David Finck - We Got Rhythm
I don't think there is a finer interpreter of Gershwin on the piano.
Freddie Hubbard - The Body & The Soul
Analogue Productions vinyl reissue on two 180g 45RPM long players. Remastered by
Steve Hoffman and pressed at Pallas Records in Germany. IMO this is Hubbard's
greatest recording, mainly due to the variety and strengths of the arrangements.
But make no mistake about it, the performances are mind numbing. There are three
different settings. A 16 piece big band, a septet, and an orchestra with strings.
Wanye Shorter and Eric Dolphy are on hand as sidemen. Produced by Bob Thiele
and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. Highly recommended.
