There Comes a Time- Gil Evans and His Orchestra (RCA). If any of you hipsters and hipsterettes might be interested in obtaining a copy of this you better get busy cause copies are about gone into history. Ryo Kawasaki, guitar; Hannibal Marvin Peterson, trumpet and voice; David Sanborn, alto sax; George Adams, tenor; Tony Williams, drums; etc, etc, etc. You know (some of you), David Sanborn made a lot of middle of the road commercial outings but in Gil Evan's company, he is a horse of a different color. Evan's estate released a few recordings of his touring group in Italy of which I have a couple with Sanborn burning brightly as he does here*. He, Evans, is an original and unusual and intoxicating artist who loved doing Hendrix tunes amongst others**. And he is not wanting for composing himself.
*Gil Evans- The Gold Collection (Fine Tune). The Individualism of Gil Evans on Verve is fine testimony to his composing skills with very good sound but his later recordings are even more individual and satisfying, in a way to me, if not as well recorded. This man was and is far out and beautiful.
**like Willie Dixon's Spoonful on The Individualism of Gil Evans.
