Got Tom Cat by Lee Morgan yesterday. Waitin on Quartet/Solo by Boddy Hutcherson which I have on vinyl but its gotten pretty noisy. It's an all around fine jazz album. Could be the only one he made for the Contemporary label (featuring McCoy Tyner) without me having looked it up. Jackie McLean is on Tom Cat. Don't know why I hadn't noticed it before but Kenny Garrett's tone is very similar to Jackie McLean's. Caustic without vibrato. I love em both. Kenny has his own imagination which I hope to hear more of when his Behind The Wall (Nonesuch) album arrives. Tom Cat is vintage 60's Blue Note but McCoy Tyner and Art Blakey are mixed too forward in the mix. My recommendation for 60's Blue Note if you could only own one has been and is Free For All- Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. Mosaic is a good follow up with the same band mates. It is excellent compositionally and has two more tracks but Free For All takes the cake for spontaneity and heat, IMO.
