Well we have had a few months to get the drivers ready with a few changes as well.
The finished drivers will have a Black phase plug not the copper.
This is cosmetic only as we just did not like the copper finish.

Over all we have the frames now for CNC baffles and grills which will be a option for the kits and we will have both the RA165.16 (16ohm) plus a RA165.8 (8ohm)Both drivers were done as we wanted a design like the RA8 but on a much grander scale and these drivers work :singing:

Time frame we are now waiting for production units and we expect them soon.We wanted the drivers finished for the summer .

The MTM along with a few other designs will use the new drivers and for those looking at the drivers we will be selling them direct as well.

These new drivers will be up on the new site by the end of August with a sale price for a limited time.

Oh well, I kinda like the copper look, but I bet the black looks cool too. It'll just stand out a little less.

Al,

Can you compare how the midrange sounds compared WR125? I am a fan of 3-way design taking advantage of each driver's strengths. The Extremis makes a wonderful bass to mid-bass driver but not as much detail (IMHO) as the WR125. This new driver looks more like a blend of a WR125 and Extremis or closer to a Scanspeak Revelator with a serious magnet.

Al

The mids are very close. Those who have listened to them want them as soon as the drivers are in stock.

Read John Chapmans review see what his comments were.

Time frame permiting we will have the CNC baffles instock at the same time as the drivers.

The front baffles will be 1" MDF using a magnetic grill as well, for those WAF.

I think an interesting application of this tower would be in a Tact 2.2XP system, with some nice crossovers to stereo Tumult 15" subwoofers.  /dream.  ;-)

Hello Al,

What cone material is used for the new driver?

Thank you.

Al,

Can you comment on the cone material?
Thank you.

The body is a blend of
Nu-Bleached kraft pulp and manila hemp.
With a Nitrile-butadiene rubber surround

Watch for a special price on the first batch coming for both the RA165.16 (16ohm driver) plus the RA165.8 (8ohm driver)
These will be coming very soon.

Hmm... Looks like this driver will be the first fruit of the Adire/Hemp Acoustics joint venture.

It sounds promising, Al.  I can't wait to see/hear more about these speakers and the drivers.

No this driver is not a Hemp and Adire designed driver.

These drivers were on the table months before that topic  was looked at :green:

Thank you Al.

Paper composite cones can sound very good.  I was happy to hear it's not a poly cone.  I believe I read somewhere that the extremis is a poly cone.  Is that true?

Regarding the new speaker, is there a possibility of modifying the design into a transmission line tower with similar sensitivity and a shallower roll off into the high 20's?

That would be something special.  I personally would pay more for a speaker like that.

Thanks in advance.

No Poly cone here.

And Yes both Extremis the 6.8 and 6.4 both are poly cones.
That is fine when used in lower frequency but not as a mid or lower mid as far as we think.

The Extremis does the lower frequency great this is why we use them in 3 ways or 4way.
Using them in the HT6 was tricky as we needed to use our longer ribbon to lower the crossover as low as possible.

This is also why the HT6 is on clearance.
With these new driver coming both the 6.5 and the 5.25 this opens a new world.

Designs we are open at this point

Do you think a two-way bipolar MLTL kit offering might be possible with the 5.25 and the AC ribbon?  I am thinking of something like one of Dave's Designs posted on Planet-10 Hifi.  I am working on a FR bookshelf and am thinking of a new HT setup...

The new drivers are taking longer as we are getting a few more done all at the same time for this MTM.

AS for designs you never know what will come but first getting the drivers in both 8 and 16ohm is a must before we get into the finished design stage.
Have some good ideas of what we want.

In time.
Taking longer but no date will be made public untill we have all the drivers in hand.

Any ETA on when the new 95db tower's will be available?  And any info on pricing and in finished/kit form?

The pre-sale pricing you've got up for the new drivers, is that each or per pair?

Thanks,
Michael

All right that driver looks beautiful.

I have Seas H571 which are similar in terms of sensitivity, Mms and GBP.

And I have built a high sensitivity/hi output speaker with them....

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-4/144711/Satelite2.JPG

Your driver somehow maintains the same 10g Mms but has four times the excursion capability.

I don't see how you are arriving at you 95db figure though.

Your 8ohm driver has a rated efficiency of 91.5db 1w/1m.

So if your 16ohm driver has also a 91.5db 1w/1m efficiency (or in the realm) then it's sensitivity would be 88.5db@2.83v.

Two of them in your MTM would get you 94.5db@2.83v@8ohm before you compensate diffraction loss.

Diffraction loss could be 3db like I use (my system is intended for use always with a subwoofer) but many speakerbuilders opt for 4db or 5db compensation to giver their systems a little more bass weight especially when using high GBP drivers like these.

So by my calculations you would end up with 91.5db or less.

Since you have not given a lot of details yet I wonder if you could elaborate.

Like I said that driver looks great.

When I figured out which direction I wanted to go with my speaker I found their were few drivers to choose from with the light Mms and high GBP I needed.

Everyone is building that little 7" two-way with bass response to 40hz or below and can reach just 105db@1m.

With my two 8ohm drivers I was able to achieve 93db@2.83v@4ohm or 90db@1w and an output capability of 113db.

By designing a crossover without diffraction loss compensation and recessing my main channels flush into the wall I get another 3db which works out to 96db@2.83v@4ohm or 93db@1w and an output capability of 116db.

Of course these numbers are with a THX crossover turned on an a small sealed cabinet Ftc=90hz.
