Bass Amps

Hey Guys

I'm currently in the market for a subwoofer amp. Something "fast"!

In my situation (JBL 4648s @ 8ohms and 100db / 1 watt), I don't think tons of power is really "needed"....but would be nice for a cushion

I've heard good things about the Crown K1 (damping factor of 4000?!...sounds good to me!).

I'd like to keep it to $500-$750ish if possible.

Any suggestions?? Hypex modules??

I have a Dayton 1000 watt plate amp for $300. Tons of power and an EQ. Plus you'd have a few hundred extra dollars to blow.

Adire Audio makes very nice Subwoofer Plate amps as well.

That Anthony Gallo is an interesting amp. My only question would be how loud is it, given the inclusion of a fan?

I'm considering plate amps as well....just wasn't sure if I was giving up too much in terms of sound quality relative to a "regular" amp.

The noise coming from the fan is negligible and should not be an issue.
If you can find a local dealer you can audition the amp before buying one.

The Gallo amp looks like the ideal solution for me except for one thing the price. Does anyone know of a similar solution for less money. I'd really like a amp with a built in crossover.

The Crown's don't have a built in EQ like the Gallo's which would really simplfy things.

Just checking to see if you looked at the Adire Audio subwoofer plate amps.

12dB or 24dB Crossover Slopes (continuously variable from 35Hz - 110Hz).
Dual Parametric EQ's
600watts into 8ohms (they have lower powered versions as well)

I have this $325 Dayton plate amp that VMPS sells as an installed option with their subs. It also privides the added benefit of a built in crossover/equalizer and dual inputs so you can input directly from a preamp and use the built in equalizer or input from a processor and use the bass equalization from the processor. I can't find any spec's on damping, but I find it provides quick, tight, clean bass as good as or better than when I was using a 300 wpc Cinenova amp.

Looks like there's quite a bit of support for the Crown amps.

Does anyone know how they fair up to the 200hz. range? This is the approximate crossover point for my system

Also, does anyone know the slope of the Gallo amp.'s crossover? Seems like a good choice as well given its feature set. I'd be curious to know its damping factor as well.

Hi Jim,

You can check the SA's manual. There is a crossover slope "EQ Boost" measurement. I hope this helps.
In addition, Galo Acoustics has excellent support which can be found in their website. It should be the same for Adire or Crown amps.

Whichever amp you choose, make sure you audition it first before buying one. Paper specs may sound different in real world application.

As an update, I went the Crown K2 route. Found one on eBay in which the seller was local (unit was close to mint).

Anyway, I got it setup with a Marchand XM-44.

This is one awesome combo! The Crown has awesome headroom and ridiculous damping of >7000 from 200hz on down.

I've got the Marchand setup for 12db of slope at 160hz.

Thanks for the advice everyone!! It certainly did help as I've got a terrifically music combo now!
