Custom tweaky UCD based amps

I am making custom UCD based amplifiers.  I can do stereo, mono, built-in Ultimate Attenuators, 100 watt, 200 watt, 350 watt and even bridged for more power.  All execution will be tweak.  The modules will be highly modified for the best sound.  No connectors will be used inside the amp...all will be hardwired for the shortest cleanest signal path.  Prices will start at $1150 for a 200 watt stereo amp.  Options for the world's best parts are available: super large 1500 watt Plitrons, Jensen and T-caps, nude Vishays, Caddocks, super regulated front ends, etc.  Whatever you can imagine, I can do.  All sold direct wholesale.  All amps made by me personally.  All with money back guarantee.  I will have more info and pricing guidelines on my website later this week.  I have modded the Tripath amps, both types of Ice Power amps and sold and modified the Nuforce amps....but the highly modifed UCD modules are in a league of their own.  Simply magical three dimensional sound.  VERY Clean, very pure.  We will have one 200 watt stereo amp available soon as a demo unit and will be sending it around the country for evaluation.  Later, we will have a pair of mono blocks as demo units as well.

I have just posted the preliminary pricing and ordering info on my website. Naturally, more all out wild things can be done than listed.  If you have other ideas, or want to try super large trannies, Teflon caps, etc. let me know.  Most anthing you can imagine, I can do.

Hi Rick,

Well, don't know if this is a fair question, but, how do these UCD sound versus a regular SS or tube amp? Considering one of these amps, but want to wait for the several vendors to finalize there lines. Have you tried the new auricap maud on the output yet? Have read all of the DIY stuff, are you sticking to the AD8620 on the front end, or gone to a discrete front end. A 1500VA transformer for the 400w amp, nah, seems to big. good for the 700. One manufacturer I have spoken to seems to indicate a 600Va or close to that value is optimal for the 400 with a pair of Jensen caps in the supply. Thanks for your time.

Ray,
Thanks for asking.  The more I tweak the modules, power supplies and implementation the more excited I become.  It's all in the details.  Stock modules are good but modified, much much better.  Even how you mount the modules effects the sound.  We are doing several things to the modules that have never been mentioned in any way on DIYaudio.com.  Check out my website for general details.  We are using a 500 watt Plitron as standard in our mono and stereo units.  Even how you mount the transformer makes a difference in sound.  We hardwire the whole thing (no push on connectors) with super wire.  Jensen caps are optional.  We are using the 8620 with custom current sources for now and will have discrete front end options in about 6 months or less.  The amps can easily be sent back to have the discrete front end modules added.  People get all worked up over one mod....like the new Auricap.  I will be trying it and if it is better than the one we have choosen then we will use it, however, it is only one of many, many mods we do to the module.

I have found that the bigger the transformer, generally speaking, the better the sound.  So, a larger tranny, even if not needed technically will have a lower output impedance and might have a more robust and cleaner sound.  Some people make claims about things that they have not tried (listened to).  What is optimal is what sounds best.  I won't really know if a 1500 watt tranny sounds better than a 500 watter until I try it. At some point, I will.  You have to realize that a 1500 watt Plitron transformer costs about $185 each plus shipping on a 26 lb. tranny.  Not too many people are trying this item.  Also takes 6 weeks to get.  Plitron transformers have been sonically compared to other transformers by some people and the results have favored the more expensive Plitrons.  A 500 watt standard Plitron lists for $96.00 each.

We are using what we consider the world's best parts and execution.  If someone wants to try something really, really wild, we are always ready to accomodate.  Your wish is our command.  The amps are really totally custom, so we can take it as far as anyone wants.  What is really cool is that the $1150 stereo amp is simply mind blowing.  With a 500 watt Plitron, 2 pairs of super damped soft recovery diodes and separate power supplies for each channel, all hardwired and damped modules, modified modules and super jacks, super wire and solder we are getting a sound that is much better than any modified class D amp that we have ever heard......Yes, even with no Jensens, no separate power supply for the front end (the power supply is modified in several ways for much better sound), no dual mono, etc.

How it sounds versus all the other super tube and solid state amps remains to be seen.  I can interpolate from the modified Nuforce that I have had here and will say that these things are going to blow some minds.  The first amps will be delivered in about 5 weeks and I will have a stereo amp for demo in about 2 weeks.  You will hear about the results from users.  The stereo demo unit will have the regulated front end (using separate 50 watt toroid) with Jensen caps, the Eichmann output jacks and possibly some more advanced mods as I am about to receive some custom parts and some other expensive parts to try on the modules.  The price that the demo amp would sell for is about $1600-$1800.  Very exciting stuff.
