So I have bought lots of LP's lately and I'm working my way through them.

I put on a "Not for sale" live version of Fleetwood Mac and hear a song I always liked but never EVER associated with FM.  It's "Oh Well"

This is the rockin tune I've heard on the radio a lot, I just never knew that FM did it.

What songs surprised you when you found out who originally did them?

Lindsey Buckingham did a remade "Oh Well" on one of the new FM discs, but the REAL "Oh Well" comes from the REAL FM with Peter Green. Should be on "Then Play On" and maybe some other albums (I had it on a red-covered JEM import irrevocably marked with magic marker by the store that sold it for $1.00).

I realized this post sounded snobbier than intended--I DO like the early FM better, but that version by Lindsey is awfully good. I was kinda surprised when I found out they included it in their live set.

I have the album "Looking Back" by John Mayall And The Bluesbreakers. Eric Clapton and Peter Green play on this album when they were very young. Every time I would listen to the album, I'd have to look at the back cover to double check who was playing guitar because I had a very hard time telling these two guitarists apart. Peter Green was damn good.

If you need  the cd , check out Fleetwood Mac "the vintage years live" on Eagle Records WK24256  year 2002.Good sound,good songs -Oh Well ,Green Manalishi,Black Magic Woman (yes that Santana song-Peter Green wrote it years ago,Santana made it a hit)and 6 other good songs.I picked it up on ebay a few months ago,I had another collection on lp.This  to me was the real FM,an english blues band. Now FM is a pop rock group IMHO.

In the 70's, "Green Manalishi" was a Holy Grail--you'd hear it on the radio now & then, but just never could find a copy on record. I was just thrilled to find a "Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits" for $1 at a salvage store.
It also has "Rattlesnake Shake" a great rough blues song that becomes rather humorous when you realize it's about masturbation--"I know a guy whose name is 'Mick.' He don't care if he ain't got no chick. He do the shake. The rattlesnake shake."

Peter Green has released a couple of cd's inrecent years, I caught his band in Portland last year, good blues band and a new style and new tone for Mr. Green. Good player.

There are several Peter Green tribute albums, one of which is "Rattlesnake Guitar" a 2 CD set by modern groups covering "classic" Green songs. Some of the groups are not household names, but it's a CD worth listening to if you happen to see it at the local store.

I never really knew about Peter Green before.  I did not ever know how FM came about either.  It was fun learning about them.

Actually I really like the free flow of info, whatever direction it takes.

Speaking of Greenland, GRANT Green has always been a fav of mine.

Live at the Lighthouse is a pretty good CD.

This thread prompted me to pull out some early FM LP's including this from '68  (though MY copy's not that early)


Technically, this band is listed as "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac" on the back cover.

Now ,if you were to switch to Brown,I'd pull out a lot of my good old Savoy Brown lp's - another group similar to the sound of early FM ! Some great tunes Train to Nowhere,I'm Tired,Tell Mama(a good Mothers Day tune),Can't Get Next To You, and many others. A nice cd collection is "The Savoy Brown Collection" Deram 844 328-2 . Two cd set -good sounding collection !
