Popping on AKSA 55N+
« on: 22 Jan 2006, 11:57 pm »
Hi all,

I'm not sure if this has just started or if its been there all along but I was listening at unusually quiet levels this evening and there's a distinct pop comming from one of the amplifier channels. Its occasional and random but its clearly audible in the silent conditions experienced tonight.

I've been running it pretty hard over the last week and I really hope I haven't buggered something up.

Any suggestions?

Anthony,

Try shorting the signal input to both channels with a wire bridge.

If the problem is still there then it is clearly coming from the AMP.

Next move would be to measure the output offset, bias, and examine all DC operating conditions.  It's possibly either a cap, or an active device.

Cheers,

Hugh

Thanks Hugh,

I was playing more music and listening for the popping but as of yet, haven't heard a thing :?

I'll be sure to listen to them carefully for the next few days. Hopefully it was just mains noise or something?

I get mains noise through my AKSA.  It pops when people turn light circuits on and off.

Anthony,

I'm pleased you've found it not a problem!

The AKSA does need reasonably clean mains, no question.  Even so, the sonics are not much changed with a quality mains conditioner, so Paul in NYC tells me (the US mains appears to be much more troublesome than Australia's mains).

The best amps for immunity to mains spikes are fully complementary.  However, while their PSRR is high they do not seem to sound more musical than the single ended circuitry used in the AKSA.

Cheers,

Hugh

I will be installing a mains conditioner in my AKSA when I can be bothered ordering it :)

Found a good page inc RS part numbers here:

single stage with a MOV should be plenty.

I have the same problem with AKSA pop when some electrical devices turn on-off. Some are worse than the other. What I found was that although they are on another power point, they are on the same wire loop. If I move the electrical devices to another power point, it is fine. So I gusss if I have a 'Audio' only power point  that connect directly to the main where the meter is, it will be fine but that will be expensive.  :(

I find another solution can simply be turning the volume up....
