Rogue Tempest II Intergrated. Can it rock?
« on: 15 Jan 2006, 07:53 pm »
Can please anyone tell me about the virtues or otherwise of this intergrated.
I'm considering getting one based on it's power (to use with my PMC FB1+ speakers (90db and 8ohms) and looks but I haven't seen many reviews of it on the net.
Are there any alternatives which have the same power, sound quality and maybe have a phono stage and headphone socket thrown in?
I believe the Tempest provides 90 wpc.

Not a lot of help...I own Rogue M-120 Magnums. I can only say that the Rogue amps are some of the most musical amps I've ever owned...I'll guess that this runs through the whole line of rogue components.

Replaced a Krell Kav-500 with the M-120's....I was surprised to find that the Rogues kicked the little Krells butt in the bass department...very good transformers in the Rogues.

IThanks Dave , hopefully the good bass is a Rogue trait then.
From the reviews it sounds what I'm looking for and it looks good to boot.
There's a chance of a McIntosh MA2275 tube intergrated as an ex-demo model but I'm waiting to get a price for it.You haven't happended to have heard that as well have you. I think it looks superb with meters on the front but I can't find any reviews for it.It comes with a tube phono stage also which would come in handy.

anyway thanks for the help,
regards,
Mick.

Mick, I haven't heard the Rogue, but they have an excellent reputation.  And, that McIntosh amp is beautiful, but I don't have any idea how it sounds either!  One thing to consider is that unless you listen at very high volume levels, you may even be happy with lower-power amps.  I rarely come close to exhausting my 15 watt per channel amplifiers with 90dB speakers, but I also live in a pretty small apartment and have a finite tolerance for loud music.

I have a few different tube amps and, funny enough, the least powerful one delivers, by-far, the best bass I've heard in my system ... brilliantly resolved, even through 4 ohm speakers.  Many factors determine this, but perhaps the most important is the output transformer.  As Dave noted, the Rogue is pretty solid in this department.  In any case, I'd expect both the Rogue and the McIntosh to sound very good, but I'd really make an effort to hear them in your own home if possible.  Good luck!

unfortunatley I don't think I'll be able to listen in my own home.
My Musical Fidelity amp are 100 wpc and the volume is only turned up to a maximum of ten to the hour. I've heard the PMC respond to lots of power but also that the are easy to drive and have 90db sensitivity and 8 ohm load.

A magazine I rwrote to recommended the Audioresearch VSi55 intergrated which doesn't look as good to me but the magazine love this integrated. I love the look of the Rogue, the pathos Logos and the vintage look of the McIntosh, but the Audioresearch doesn't llok too good, although I won't determine which one I get based on looks.
Thanks again,much appreciated,
regards,
Mick.
