Clarti or Lotus with a tube preamp?
« on: 15 Jan 2006, 01:57 am »
Hello All

I am currently researching some 300b push pull amps to use with my omegas.  This project will take some time and I need a better then good amp  to use in the interim.  I have a few restored vintage tube pre amps and wanted any opinions on folks who have used vinnies creations with a tube pre.

I saw some earlier posts commenting favorably on the cariti with an octal tube pre. Neither of my pres are octal (12axs mostly).  Essenstially, does use of a tube pre give this amp some added warmth or body (good thing IMHO) or does the tube pre nulllify the speed, "clarity" and transparency of the red wine units.

Thanks all, I have some idea of the general sound having experimented with the flying mole amps, the sonic impact all with tube pres.  This sound was good but not good enough to keep.....thus far

Hi kbuzz3,

I received your email and responded to it yesterday.

Using an active preamp in front of the Clari-T is also going to add noise and distortion to some degree.  The tube distortion is not necessarily a bad thing and many like the flavor that tubes add.  I prefer passive preamps, but it is a matter of taste and I do have customers who are using tube preamps with their Clari-T and are very happy with the results.

I never tried the Super 3 Alnicos with the Clari-T (I believe Louis has).  I believe they are less efficient and I'm not sure how loud you like to play your music or how big your room is, but 6 watts of the Clari-T *might* not be enough power for you.  Have you tried your Super 3 Alnicos with a 6 watt amp before (or something close to that)?

Regards,

JLM
