If you go backwards and look at bands that influenced their music, check out:

The Byrds
The Band
Neil Young
REM

George

And to go even further back in this genre, don't forget The Buffalo Springfield.

Short-lived but talented and awesome band whose influence is profound and wide-reaching.

And to add on to this, don't forget Big Star, who is completely unknown, but helped to really influence many jangle rock bands like REM and Wilco.

My favorite radiohead song - Creep - is on Pablo Honey, but The Bends is definitely my favorite CD. There is not a bad song on it. OK Computer is probably my second favorite.

Awesome band.....

yes, the stone roses... actually I got into the stone roses before liking radiohead.  I still am not completely into Wilco's earlier stuff, mostly just the last two.  And I too do not really care for the Beatles that much, only a couple songs here and there.  Joe Cocker is the man.  IMO, Bob Dylan is a great song writer but terrible performer (esp singing).

YHF I would say is Tweedy's best album.  Summerteeth is also a really good album. Have any of you listened to the Billy Bragg and Wilco albums?? They are playing music by Billy Bragg and lyrics written by Arlo Guthrie. They are both super good and I highly recommend them.

Woody Guthrie, not Arlo.  The family found a bunch of lyrics Woody wrote and never put to music, and passed them on to Billy Bragg and Wilco.  Great result.

Although what people cite as Radiohead's predecessor's are some of my all time favorite bands, for some reason I've never really enjoyed any Radiohead I've heard.  Then again, Wilco never made it past the "their OK" stage with me either.  Maybe it's a generational thing.

I tried to convince myself to like both RadioHead and Wilco, could not do it.
I find it interesting that a lot of people will watch movies together, good or BAD,
but many of us listen to music alone or only with those that have common tastes.

Its an interesting phenomemon because people can get so emotionally involved when discussing their favorite music.

U2 has never done it for me - to me they are too derivative and pop, and Bono is such a boneheaded ... The opening hook of their latest big pop song was lifted right out of another song, can't remember which one.

I know nothing of Radiohead, have only heard of them for years, but I will have to check them out. Not a big REM fan, the Stipe guy really creeps me out. But the other influences intrigue me, and I have several albums from them that I enjoy. Buying CDs based on what others have written is such a crapshoot.

I think music is very personal to some people,  I feel a bit offended when someone I know criticises me about my music taste.... That's why I don't play my favorite music when I've got company...

And I never liked U2 myself,  I'd rather listen to  The Walkmen. A very good band , they sound a bit like U2 but are much better.  ( look up the albums : Bows and Arrows       and   Everyone who pretended...)

But for all the people who don't like radiohead,  You should try either  , The bends or Kid A , and see wich one you like the most.   Kid A,  very original.

I like their more experimental stuff but the bulk of what they did leaves me cold.  The only albumn I've listened to more than once was Kid A. The Thom Yorke albumn was much better than the Radiohead stuff.

sts9fan,

I really like the Billy Bragg and Wilco sings Woodie Mermaid Avenue record. I think I'll put it on right now.

Enjoy,
