Quad ESL questions
« on: 8 Jan 2006, 08:25 pm »
I have 2 questions:

1. Has anyone found that cleaning up the power supply to ESLs (mine are 989s) has a noticeable effect?  (I'm planning on building a Felicia - see The Lab).

2. Does anyone know how many watts 989s draw?

Hi. I've got esl57's, which respond amazingly to quality power leads. So I can only assume its a case of the more the better. The best is probably a dedicated mains spur, with no fuses or plugs in-line, relying on fuse and protection in the Quads, and a breaker in the supply. This seems to do what $thousands gets with filtering.

Thanks for that Gilbodavid.

Quad have answered my other question: 6 watts.  I assume that's the same regardless of whether they are playing or idling since the drive power is via the speaker cables - unless anyone tells me different??

I see you've found your answer, which seems reasonable. A handy dandy tool I use (the GB equivalent) is -

but it might be depressing to see how much it costs you to power those Pass monoblocs  :(

Have a look at the supply mods at the Izzy Wizzy page http://www.izzy-wizzy.com/audio/spkr.html also have a look at he Acoustat mod site at diyaudio.com at this address http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/tweaks/acoustat/

Power cords can have a tremendous impact in both directions (good ones and bad ones) so borrow some good cords and check them out. The choke supply mod is also a big deal. I you want to hear the impact of your Quad supply you can do so easily. Wait till after the big power rush in your area (usually after midnight) and listen to an especially well recorded piece of music. Then simply unplug yyour supplies and replay the same piece of music. The diffeence you hear is the supply noise removed. You panels will play for quite some time before they slowly begin to discharge and level will drop slowly. Hope this info helps. Best regards Moray James.
