Remote for iPod?
« on: 6 Jan 2006, 11:23 pm »
The iModed iPod seems like a great idea for a combined portable and home system source. It makes less sense at home, though, if I can't select tracks remotely.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,
Alan

There are a number of remotes for the iPods, that plug into the top of the unit.

Most are RF, which is good in that you don't have to have a line of sight for results, but I got an IR model for mine, so that my learning IR remote could operate it.

There are ones that have more menu functions available, but mine just has Play/Pause, Track Advance and Volume (which controls the iPod volume through the headphone jack, not the line out, which is preferable).

I'm not sure how I would use extra menu functions anyway, without being able to see the iPod display across the room.

There also are some docks available that have remote capability, but some of them actually use the headphone output, so scrutinize them carefully.

You can Google "ipod remote" and get a lot of results.

This was posted on Sonicflare 28th December - not sure whether It will have full function with the RWA imod because Vinnie disables the line out at the bottom but if it does  it should fit the bill nicely!

That sounds way better than the one Apple sells for the iPod. Apple's is just a dumb remote with no video of any sort, and doesn't even allow you to create playlists or anything useful like that.

Hi Alan B,

Welcome to Audiocircle!  Yes, there seem to be plenty of remotes for the iPod and the right one for you depends on how much functionality you need.

Hi Jim,

The iMod does disable the line-out exiting the dock connector, but this should have no effect on the remote because the remote is tapping into a data port (digital signal), not the audio signal that would exit the line out.  In other words, the remote interface doesn't use the line-out signal and wouldn't know if it was there or not, so everything should work fine.  8)

Jay S

I use the Apple universal dock + remote with my iPod.  It may use RF as well since it works even when I don't point the remote directly at the dock.

One nice thing about the remote linked above is that it displays the name/artist of the song.  But the Apple dock + remote is not too expensive and looks very sleek (not sure how much the other would cost).

Thanks all. I wanted to make sure that these different systems didn't interfere with the headphone jack before buying the iPod.

I've orded an iPod from BH photo. Best price I've found and I've dealt with them before. I'll load some tunes, check it out and get some before mod listening and then off it goes to Vinnie.

I like the new control that gives a readout on the remote. I think I'll wait for that, but if it takes too long $30.00 isn't bad for a temporary solution.

Or, you could just get the brand new iPod remote from Apple, announced about an hour ago (along with the Intel based PowerBook replacements and iMac).

Looks as though it is only compatible with the Nano and Video models so won't work with the iMod.

Shame, because it is a decent price.

Thoughts on remotes

You guys convinced me and I just got my iPod, loaded some albums and hooked it into my system. Much better than I expected. Some limitations as my speakers are out for an upgrade and the current system isn't as revealing as some (Nohr SE9 and Spendor S3/5s).

It will go to Vinnie for the iMod next week.

I've looked at all the remotes I could find on the Internet. I would suggest that people in my position wait a bit for the iJet 2 way remote. The remote screen and additional functionality are great, but I like the fact that it docks to the bottom rather than the top of the iPod. Vinnie has gone to a lot of trouble improving the signal path in the iMod. It seems silly to add an extra plug, socket, and wire to the path as all the top mounted remotes I've seen plug into the headphone jack.

No experience, just a thought. Now we have to wait and see how much the new remote costs.

Best to all - ain't this a great way spend our time?

Alan
