That's all you need I think. Might have to download software that your particular station uses.  But I found internet radio mediocre at best with my dial-up service and only now that I have cable connection can I get a good quality steady stream.  I have connected my computer to a Onkyo receiver and some JBL in-walls for better sound than the computer speakers I have.

It'd be hard for me to imagine life without cable internet! :o   POTS really sucks.

At present I have the computer hooked up to a pretty ancient Yammy 3 pc sub/sat multimedia rig.  It wouldn't be hard to dig my an old reciever and hook up a pair of JBL HLS-610's I have boxed up in the attic.  They were damned good speakers for the money, and would cream any media type speakers I've ever heard.

Does internet radio stream MP3, WMA or something entirely different?

Rob,
I'm not sure what system is used for internet radio, but mine sounds pretty good.  Don't know about others but I just got a Y-adaptor so I can choose between computer speakers or audio speakers. JBL's may be fine for listening to tunes, but hearing "You've Got Mail!" over them can be a little disturbing.

Does the sound quality fall into about the 128 kps MP3 range?  I'd be more concerned with finding new music than fussing over whether or not it's 'audiophile approved' or not; still, better sound is always welcome.

I'm not quite sure how to quantify the sound, but it's certainly good enough to investigate new music or listen to as background music or casually.  I wouldn't hook it up to a great system, but it works well with the adequate one I'm using (which I also use to play poor CD's).

I *used* to listen all the time. Here in the Mid-South (near Memphis) there were several great FM stattions. Now that Clear Channel has ruined the market, I rarely listen. The only saving grace to FM around here is the local NPR station which is entertaining at night and on the weekends. Have noticed the sound quality on most stations has gotten worse with the heavy-handed application of compression and limiting.   :(

Listen to the local jazz station daily. Quality is very good through my B&K tuner, rivals cd's.  Most people would be surprised to hear the FM quality on this system.

I'm thinking of starting a radio station that ONLY plays "Smoke On the Water"

This is a great idea!

You could have a "SOTW Bloopers" segment where an intrepid investigator travels to guitar stores recording renditions of this classic. Extra points for anyone who does it in full view of a "You can play anything you like on this equipment as long as it's not Smoke on the Water" sign!

My first cassette tape ever contained which song...

You mean, like, "NO, you're beyond help Rob" or "No, there isn't much on internet radio?

I mean "No, FM radio isn't a serious music source for me"
