CompUSA is having a two rebate deal on a 300GB internal ATA/133 Maxtor. $80 after the rebates. You can buy a Bytec USB external enclosure and still make out pretty well. The sale goes until this Saturday. NOTE: the rebate form also has to be postmarked - or submitted electronically - by the 31st. Fortunately this rebate submission is available on CompUSA's electronic rebate website.

If you are paranoid like me. :)

(I work with puters all day and I *know* they are out to get me..)

Get a Buffula terrabyte NAS storage with hotswappable RAID 5 or equivalent.
Dell has them for $720 + shipping. Mine is setup for 800gb at RAID5. Serves as my DVD server as well.

I know they are overkill but I say.

Rip once and never bother again. (I should know, I ripped all my CDs at 160vbr, 256ABR and 320ABR). Tuck it away and forget about it.

Now I just say make 'em WAVs. They are lossles and pretty much can be played by any platform/player. FLAC might be worth looking at if you are concerned at HD space.

Cheers,
et

I thought I'd bump this again with an excellent hard drive deal.  This week Staples has a 200 GB Maxtor hard drive (IDE, not SATA) for $40 after a $40 Easy Rebate (no mailing or UPC cutting).  And there is a $10 off $40 coupon easily obtainable (see this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=1808972&enterthread=y ) with the end result 200 gigs for $30 plus tax.

Here's a link to the hard drive:  http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?storeId=10001&siteSection=specials&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=88043&cmArea=WEEKLY%20DEALS

Credit goes to the fine posters in the Hot Deals section of anandtech.com.

Forgive my ignorance:  The Buffalo 1TB NAS sounds very interesting, please tell how to connect it.  Do you hook it up to your existing router?

Anyone consider the noise level of a drive?

Especially raid boxes?

You would be surprised how loud most are. But then again, if the rest of your computer s loud then it’s a moot point. I’ve gone way out of my way to keep my machine quiet, as quiet as possible. Again, you would be very surprised to hear just how many db’s the average drive makes.
The Maxtor DiamondMAX’s are of the quietest.

I shop www.newegg.com exclusively.

With a NAS raid box, it doesn't matter.  I just have to get a quiet mini pc to run things in the music room.

Since you guys are looking for a "screaming hard drive" I expect noise WILL be an issue.

Ok yes I know stupid joke re: the subject... but what can I say?  I'm easily amused...

I picked up the same hard drive mentioned by Thump553 in his post. 200GB for $40 was too hard to resist. I picked up this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145225 case from NewEgg because it did not have a fan. It has been running for 5 days and it is cool to the touch.  I’ll be running SlimServer from my laptop. I ordered my SB3 yesterday and I’ll have it by Friday. In the mean time I’ll be ripping my CD’s to FLAC.

Yet another tempting hot deal-this Friday in its midnight madness sale (3/17 6PM to midnight) Compusa will have an Essential 250 GB USB external hard drive for $70 after $100 (ouch!) in two mail in rebates.  According to spec sheet, this has a Western Digital Caviar 7200 RPM 2 MB cache (ouch).  I'm guessing this will be pretty quiet if its a WD drive.

Here's a link to the product description:

Thanks for the heads up Thump!  I picked up an external Seagate 200G with 8MG cache for $29 during midnight madness, usually $139...now I just need an enclosure and I'm set.
