That’s it. A lot of words but basically just move the firmware directory out of 6.2.2 and copy the version 15 firmware directory back in it’s place.

It sure makes it a heck of a lot easier when you want to compare the sound of the two!

One thing to keep in mind when comparing firmware version 15 to version 24 and above is that there was a polarity bug in V15. The analog outputs were inverted and this was corrected in V24.

Note that if you are running a modded SB that does not have the opamp after the DAC, then polarity will be correct with older firmware and inverted with anything V24 and above. It is correct with the newer versions if you are using an SB that has it's original opamp on the analog outputs.

Now, plenty of folks say that absolute polarity doesn't matter but plenty also believe it matters. If you are comparing firmware versions 15 to 28 and want it to be apples to apples, you should invert the speaker polarity when doing so. And of course proper level matching would be required to make for an accurate comparison. I believe the only places the volume levels match number for number when using V15 vs V28 firmware is at 40. I have measured both and they are exactly the same at full output but the curve below that is different.

I'm using the digital out with the Squeezebox volume control disabled. I still can hear a difference.

I have a CD with two sets of songs; each set has a song recorded in the "correct" polarity and a second song with reversed polarity.  I sat one night listening to these over and over and over and I honestly couldn't tell the difference.

I have a question about changing the firmware from V28 to V15 in Slimserver 6.2.2. I did this on my windows computer by installing 6.1.1 and copying the file named Firmware to another folder. I then unistalled 6.1.1 and installed 6.2.2 and deleted the file called firmare and copyed the one from 6.1.1 to the same folder, but when I look in the menu on the SB2 it said that the play firmware is version 28. Should it say version 15?

The player should indicate that you have the 15 firmware. When you replaced the V28 firmware with the 15 did you get prompted to upgrade the firmware by pressing and holding the brightness button on the remote? If not it may be because you did not shut down Slimserver first before replacing the firmware.

I'm not a home but isn't there a (text) file that has to be swaped or updated to tell SB what version firmware should be running?

Thanks for the information. I had to uninstall Slimserver 6.2.2 and install 6.1.1. Before I copied the firmware from 6.1.1 I stopped slimserver and restarted it. When I restarted 6.1.1 the SB2 prompted me to update the firmware. I did and the SB indicated that it was using V15. I then uninstalled 6.1.1 and installed 6.2.2 stopped slimserver and deleted the firmware folder and replaced it with the one from 6.1.1. When I restarted slimserver the SB never prompted me to update the firmware and when I checked the SB it still indicated it was using V15 and I can tell that the volume is louder at lower settings. Does it sound like I got it correct this time?

If you haven't already done so be sure to disable the Squeezebox digital volume control.  That and firmware 15 will ensure you get the best possible sound outside of spending money on mods.

thanks jholz, v 15 sounds great. I can't tell the difference between v28 and 15, but thats probably because i have pretty low-standard speakers and amp. (yet to upgrade these)

To all, 1 question: i have disabled in slimserver the volume adjustment, but i can still lower the volume with the remote control. to me that doesnt seem like its completely disabled...any thoughts?

Only the digital outputs are affected.
