Driver repair

6I was wondering if anyone knows of someone that can repair a high end audio driver that was damaged by an amp that failed and was putting out 40 volts of DC into the driver. I would believe that the voice coil is completly blown.  I am interested in someone that would be able to match the voice coil that is in there and not just put in any old kind of voice coil and call it fixed. Someone that will take measurements of the good driver and duplicate another one to the exact specs. The driver was originally custom made for a small speaker manufacturer. The manufacture is no where to be found. The speakers sold in the U.S. for around $6K about 5 years ago. I am really looking for someone that will be able to fix either the one driver or rebuild both and have them perform like they originally did and not just something that works.

I would appreciate any good recommendations,

Gregg

The Speaker Workshop in Fort Wayne, IN claimed to go up to Chicago on a weekly basis to get drivers to fix.

Don Morrison winds his own voice coils and you might be able to talk him into
fixing yours.

If it were me, I would talk to Don first.  Oh, you should know that he doesn't think wire makes any difference

Thanks Marbles,
I will give him a call. I really am looking for a guy that understands high end audio. Someone that believes wire does make a difference. And that the voice coil can change the sound of your driver.

He will do all the measuring etc. and get the voice coils just right....it's interconnects etc.. that he has a hard time grasping...at least the last time I spoke to him, which was about 4 years ago.

If he will do it, he will do you a great job IMO.

If you let us know what brand of speaker you are dealing with, then we might be able to give you an idea of where to look....

Dunlavy?
Meadowlark?

Have you looked at:

Here's another place linked on the Madisound website:

I don't have any idea about them, but you might also try talking to them....

Good luck

Thanks RickB,
I appreciate the lead. The one that Marbles mentions is looking real promising.
The speakers are from some unknown company called "R Audio". I believe they were from Hong Kong or somewhere in the far east. A friend on mine was at CAS about 5 years ago. He heard these speakers and fell in love with them. He worked for a dealer and they were concidering importing these speakers into the U.S. They opted not to do it but he picked up this pair for a good price. They were going to retail in the U.S. for around $6,000. The driver was custom made for this manufactire and from what I hear he was rejecting a lot of drivers that he tested. For some reason they are nowhere to be found right now.
