Correcting for a pole in the room.

Has anyone had any experience with correcting/treating for a pole your listening room? I have a pole about 1 foot to my right, 2 feet in front of my listening position and am definately hearing early and late reflections off it, pulling the image heavy to the right side of the room, and giving a wierd illusion that there is a source of sound from behind and to my right.

Would some simple audio diffusing foam work?

A friend of mine had a similar problem in his old listening room. We wrapped the pole in several layers of burlap. Foam might have worked better but the burlap made a significant improvement at minimal cost.

Is it for the exotic dancers?  They might not like it wrapped in anything, might make their routine hard.

You should ask in the Acoustics circle as Ethan will probably have a better idea than I do.  I'd wrap it with fiberglass for at least 4" thickness and wrap that with burlap after a layer of batting to keep the fiberglass in.  You can send the dancers over here and they can use my pole, the pole that goes ceiling to floor  :D

warnerwh, thanks for the clarification.

The problem is, the more absorption material you add the bigger the pole gets and the more sound it blocks.

I'd first try adding high density fiberglass just on the side between the pole and the nearby speaker to pick up the majority of reflections without increasing the apparent width of the pole.

I'm wondering how big the pole is. I have a 4x4" pole nearby. I never noticed any audible effect... ?

An exotic dancer did come over one time but complained about the square corners. We had to do cable comparisons instead :(

No, it's not for strippers (unfortunately).
The pole is a round 4-5" metal pole.

A 4-5" metal pole sounds very stripper-compatable.

Yes, yes it is.  :P

I used some dark colored egg foam around it and it did the trick. Now I need to figure out how to cover it so wifey dosn't freak. Either way, the basement is all mine (she got the 1st and 2nd floors), so I'm pretty safe (as long as she doesn't catch me with the strippers!
:nono: )
