Hi I'm a new member and would welcome any help from you experienced music lovers.

I have a Musical Fidelity A3cr pre and amp. I'm looking to upgrade one or the other and was considering the Music First Audio passive pre amp, Modulus 3a pre or using the Musical Fidelity pre with NuForce 9 power amps. I've been told by someone this would be a bad move as it wouldn't improve the sound. I'm looking for a weightier presentation than in m opinion the MF A3cr cmbination provides.

My front end is Michell Gyrodec, with Graham Slee Era Gold MV, Dynavector DV20x HO and speakers are PMC FB1+.

I like a bit of reggae amongst other things, and would like more bass but with smooth mids and highs. Any suggestions?

Sorry no one has been able to offer any help, but
Welcome Mick!
just the same.
I don't know how practical it is to ship to the Isles, but the Nuforce is not very big. If it is practical, then it's always best to audition in your system before making a final committment. If not, there are lots of great components available on your side of the pond.

Having briefly auditioned both MF products 3 yrs ago, I am just making a guess here and didn't do any direct comparisons.

I do think that the NuForce amp would be an improvement over the MF amp, however I would probably try and mate it with a good tube preamp if at all possible.  From lots of owner feedback, it appears that this combo gives the bests results.

Like Audiojerry says, try to arange for an audition if at all possible or maybe buy used off of Audiogon so you can turn around and sell if it doesn't provide what you are looking for.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and advice.Sorry for delayed reply.

Do you mean the NUForce would be better mated to a tube pre amp or the Musical Fidelity A3cr pre?

I was thinking of going down this route (tube pre amp) as I could then continue to use the MF amp then upgrade down the line. I'm not the richest so I'll have to find interest free credit or get a loan but presumably there will be more and more amps similar to the NuForce design coming out over the next few years and hopefully the prices will reduce also.

What do you think of the Audible Illusions Modulus 3a pre ?
I read somewhere it can sound a little lean which I want to avoid at all costs. Is this just with the stock tubes.

again thanks,
all the best,
Mick.

Yes, mate the NuForce with a tube preamp.

If you can afford it, I would probably get the Modwright unit.  I have yet to hear somebody say something bad and the few times I have heard it in a system, I very much enjoyed the sound.

If the Modwright is out fo your range, I would think about the Eastern Electric MiniMax.  I haev compared the MiniMax to the MF preamp and the MiniMax was more 3D, had a better soundstage, and presented a more enjoyable sound.

One other possible choice is the juciymusic preamp.  Haven't heard it, but somebody I respect owns one and likes it a lot.

Lastly, I am not a big fan of the AA preamp.  I think it is colored and really hides a lot of detail, texture, and character of the music.

Hope this helps.

It's funny I've just this minute been looking at the juicymusic website.
I like the styling of it too.
I could sell my phno stage and pre amp prbably raise half it 's cost.

The only thing I'm worried about is shipping to the UK - being damaged and the high import duty and VAT(value added tax).

I may look into it more. I can get the minamx over here on a thirty day trial so may be worth investigating.

Do you have the NUForce amps yourself? I'm excited by some of the reviews and their desciption of the bass the amps produce.
I like a bit of reggae and bought my speakers acoordingly PMC FB1+ as they have a claimed frequency repsonse of 20hz.

regards,
Mick.
