Anyone use a xo on Largers?
« on: 19 Nov 2005, 03:07 am »
I'm thinking of getting an external crossover to use with my largers. The Largers take over for my RM-40s @ 80Hz, my plan would be to have the 12" driver handle from 50Hz up and let the 15" driver handle everything below.

Has anyone tried this? Is it recommended or a total waste of time/money?

thanks

I'd just run the largers below 45-50hz and run the RM 40's full range. This is exactly what I do although I'm not using the Larger.

Hi,

I know this is going to sound a little stupid but how do you wire up a passive subwoofer to your system?

I'm aware that i would need an amplifier but how do you tune in the level of the sub output?  Do you connect the sub to your preamp?

I have never used a subwoofer and that is why i'm asking these questions.

Regards

There are a couple of different ways to do this.  If you're using a preamp that has a sub output (as most home theater versions do), you can adjust the sub output with the preamp.  In my case, I bought an amp that is adjustable (a QSC 1304).  This amp allows you to adjust the level.  In addition, I'm running an active crossover, which has additional controls for adjusting level, phase, crossover frequency, etc. I run my RM40s full range and then run the entire range to the active crossover and from there run the selected low frequencies to the amp (which I turn all the way up, or to a high level anyway.

you might also take a look at fmods from parts express-
they are a inline low pass filter thingy-a rca male one end and rca female the other-
i use them with my larger

Hi Jon,

You might want to check with B, but I think the two woofers are designed with what Brian feels are the perfect "slopes/rolloffs" to allow them to integrate with each other.

I think the most important "integration" concern is that of the one between the RM40s (@ 80hz) and the LARGER.

Depending on the "plane" of the LARGER to the RM40s the "phase" may need to be adjusted, and great care must be take to reduce the area of "common" frequency response, or to make sure it is in the same plane and phase.

What was it you wanted to acheive with the x-crossover?

Hi John,

thanks for the reply. I was mostly just fishing to see if anyone has tried using a crossover on the 2 drivers of the Larger. The idea came from checking out the $12,000 Velodyne 1812, which claims to use a crossover btwn it's 12" and 18" drivers.

I have the extra amplifier channels laying around, so it'd be relatively cheap to just throw a xo in the mix.

Sounds like it's probably just a waste of effort though if the drivers are designed to play together.

If you had the right slope on both it would probably work OK, but nothing say you can't use a seperate amp on each, since they automatically "blend".
