Bubba, Rob, Ears -
Figured the local A/C movie connoisseur's would have something to say about the new Harry Potter movie.

Anybody else had a chance to see it?

Thanks,
Jeff

I actually haven't caught it yet.

Tried to get tickets to the IMAX showings. They were all sold out over a week ago.

And I've not made solid plans yet with any of the people I'd planned on seeing it with. Would like to see it soon, just not sure when "soon" will be. I probably should've just caught a private screening of it a day or two ago...

I am 40, the books were fun as were the previous movies, and have 3 rug rats.  Have I seen the movie?  Hell no,  I am in UB.  Maybe it will be in the lone English (mongolian subtitled) theater next month.  At that point...Damn straight, I will be going in with my 7 year old.
Rob, just cuz you are an old geezer over the hill, don't mean that you can't an enjoy a teenage, magic, evil sorcerer with cool monsters movie!

I'm in my 40's, and the kids get the books after I finish them.

These days, my wife and I mostly see "kids" movies. Movies like Chicken Run and even Finding Nemo are written to entertain adults. I watched jokes in Wallace and Grommit sail right over the heads of the kiddies in the audience. I'm as likely to put on _Pirates of the Carribean_ as _Matrix_.

Kids movies today are not the moronic Disney offerings of my youth; Disney's _Mulan_ was not Disney's horrible _Jungle Book_.

That said, skip the latest Potter if you haven't read the books. They really squeezed just to get the main plot in, and things went by at a whirlwind pace. And the new actor for Dumbledore was awful.

Sorry Rob, didn't know you were kidless, or for that matter, how old you are.

With regards to the movie.  I thought it was very good.  As previously mentioned the graphics were great.  A bit darker than the previous ones.

Agree with Scott's comments.  No necessarily to skip the movie, but not having read the books myself it appeared they were trying to pack an awful lot of info in, even though the movie was still 2+ hours.  And yes, the new Dumbledorf just didn't cut it for me either.  I kind of liked the more

Many suggest not to take younger kids, while much of the storyline goes over my 7 year old son's head, he was not scared or lost any sleep last night over it.  YMMV.

Not sure if they show the same trailers around the country or not, but the King Kong movie looks like it has the potential to be a huge hit.  It has Jackson's fantastic 'Lord of the Rings' type graphics, hopefully the story line holds up.  Can't wait.

Regards,
Jeff

Oh, I actually like a lot of 'kiddie movies.'  But the whole Harry Potter phenomenon annoys me to no end.  No, I haven't read any of them so maybe they're better than they sound.  But I barely have enough time to read good books (and see good films) without reading a lot of fluff.

BTW, lately I've been on a major H.P. Lovecraft kick...

Rob,

I've not read any of the books either. Realy doubt I ever will. But I gotta say that the movies are pretty enjoyable.

Pick up the first 3 on disc and watch 'em. Though you should get the first movie from Canada as they have the proper version while the US gets an "edited" version.

Yes, could someone living outside of the USA please explain what this word "philosopher" means?  We Americans are not accustomed to your exotic phrases and strange tongues from far off lands!  Please type slowly, we are very slow on the uptake.

That's very true.  Probably because adults have to take children to movie theaters so...might as well make it interesting for everyone.  Animated films are often full of subtext and humor that only adults will understand.  Whereas with TV cartoons you can address kids directly with the meaningless tripe they love. :P

I've always wanted to read that stuff so I could understand metal lyrics better.  (Alas, too lazy...)  I mean, what the hell IS the thing that should not be anyway?

This is the funniest thing I've ever read concerning the Harry Potter phenomenon.  It does not get any better than this.  What could possibly be funnier than serious religious people quoting THE ONION!?  That makes my whole week.  You can't MAKE this stuff up!

I just saw a post on AVS about an I max that wasn't even showing H/P because of The Polar Express :? ....were my local I max is showing both of these movies plus a few regular I max movies to boot.

I guess all Imax's are not required to play the same movies at any given time.

Personally, I think the books are extremely imaginative.  True, the writing isn't on the level of Lord of the Flies or other great books, but the stories are very distinctive.  And this comes from a person whose original readings were limited to the classics only.  After that, I branched out to science fiction, but I spent much time reading classics.

Just got back from the local IMAX.

I'd have to say I liked this one a good bit better than the last one. Something about the last one didn't quite work for me.

I've not read the book (nor any of them for that matter), so I can't say how it compares to that. So I'm only basing my opinion on how the movie was by itself, and by comparison to the other movies. Even though I'd not read the books, I felt like I was missing something on more than one occasion. If I hadn't gotten that feeling every so often I would've liked the movie a whole lot more.

The SFX didn't look like SFX, so that was nice. I don't recall the other 3 movies being able to say the same. Sure, the effects of the other movies weren't really bad, but things were better done this time around.

Not sure where I'd rate this movie compared to the others besides saying that I liked this one better than the third one. But I would like to see it again a few more times.

I'll start another thread about what I thought about the presentation in IMAX.
